Population-based Data Linkage To Investigate The Health And Development Of Children Born After IVF
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$321,972.00
Summary
In Australia 1 in 25 births are conceived from IVF treatment and this is increasing. My research program will use a comprehensive set of linked population data to address key questions in the IVF field following major changes to IVF practice in the last decade. This research (examining fetal growth, birth defects, intellectual disability and school achievement) has the potential to influence clinical practice and will greatly improve the information available for pre-treatment counselling.
Preterm Birth And Exposure To Fine Particulate Matter
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$341,068.00
Summary
Preterm birth is the single most important cause of perinatal mortality and leading cause of subsequent morbidity in the western world. This project involves an investigation of the effects of fine airborne particulates and their chemical constituents on preterm birth among half a million pregnant women in Australia and the US. Levels of particulates will be rigorously assessed using traditional methods such as chemical analyses of field samples and novel methods such as processing satellite ima ....Preterm birth is the single most important cause of perinatal mortality and leading cause of subsequent morbidity in the western world. Molecular Pharmacology Of Chemokine Receptor Signalling In Cancer
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$371,770.00
Summary
Molecular pharmacology is the study of how hormones, neurotransmitters and pharmaceuticals interact with our cells through receptors, which transfer a signal across the cell membrane to change the function of that cell. Chemokine receptors are recognised to play a role in the development of many cancers. Understanding how these receptors work has enormous implications for improving our ability to develop better anti-cancer treatments with fewer side effects.
Tackling Chronic Otitis Media And Its Impact On Children: Evidence And Action
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$286,891.00
Summary
This fellowship aims to improve outcomes for children with otitis media (OM) and hearing loss. This will be achieved through updated national and international guidance on the treatment of OM following a suite of systematic reviews, the trial of new interventions to improve outcomes for children with OM and improving access to treatment for children with OM by establishing an audiology telehealth program for children in rural and remote areas.
The Importance Of Neutrophil Plasticity In Early Cystic Fibrosis Lung Disease
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$318,768.00
Summary
Lung disease is a lifelong problem for people with cystic fibrosis (CF). Blood immune cells called neutrophils swarm the lung and cause ongoing damage. No treatments exist because how CF lungs talk to neutrophils is poorly understood. I will apply new skills from an international neutrophil expert to study samples from AREST CF, a world leading CF research group. This unique combination will recreate the early CF lung in the laboratory, testing triggers of CF lung disease and potential drugs.
Exploring The Potential For Built Environment Intervention To Improve Adult And Child Physical Activity And Health
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$309,428.00
Summary
Health-promoting behaviours - such as physical activity - that are maintained from childhood to adulthood have a positive effect on health status. My research will examine aspects of the built environment associated with child behaviour, health and development and use these findings to formulate recommendations to key stakeholders for the design of user-friendly, active-living environments for children and interventions targeting adults.
Using Total Population Data To Describe The Characteristics Of Respiratory Infections In Order To Predict Future Epidemics And Recommend Vaccination Strategies For Western Australian Children
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$294,892.00
Summary
Respiratory infections are a major reason for children to go to hospital. I am an epidemiologist and I will be using previously collected and linked laboratory and hospital data from Western Australian children to better understand how these infections flow through the population over different seasons. I will then be able to predict future epidemics of respiratory infections and how different vaccine programs might have an impact in reducing how many children are affected by these infections.
Improving Cardio-metabolic Health Outcomes In Indigenous Australian Mothers
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$320,891.00
Summary
This research program includes a series of linked mixed methods studies to inform development of acceptable, strength-based, and family-centred strategies to support Indigenous mothers to improve cardio-metabolic health: 1. linked epidemiological data analysis 2. qualitative research to understand perspectives of women and service providers 3. collaborative formative research and evaluation
The Identification Of Thoracic Targets For Prevention And Intervention In Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$316,449.00
Summary
The persistence of breathing problems from infancy to later life is a complication of premature birth with lifelong consequences. Breathing problems often occur together with lung disease, but prematurity can also affect heart and blood vessel development, and weakness of the main breathing muscle. We will find out how much the heart, lungs and diaphragm contribute to breathing problems in babies; helping us to better predict, diagnose and treat severe breathing problems in babies born preterm.
