I am a clinician neuroscientist studying the physiology and pathophysiology of how the human brain, spinal cord and muscles produce voluntary and automatic movements.
Through the research supported by this Australia Fellowship, Prof Goulding will recruit and establish an internationally recognized team of researchers to study how nerve cells in the spinal cord function and contribute to the sensorimotor networks that control movement, posture, balance and protective reflexes. I use multidisciplinary and neuroimaging approaches to understand how the biochemistry of the brain affects how the brain functions in health and disease. This basic science underpins treatment approaches and furthers our understanding of a wide range of brain disorders.
I have established and head the Melbourne Neuropsychiatry Centre within the University of Melbourne. My university position is a research chair with the specific aim of leading a team of researchers in neuropsychiatric research. One of the goals of the Centre is to deliver world-class neuroimaging research in psychiatric disorders. I head a team of researchers that have been undertaking neuroimaging and neuropsychological work on schizophrenia and psychosis since 1993 in Australia.
