Loop-mediated Isothermal Amplification(LAMP): A Novel Tool For The Diagnosis Of Mixed Malaria Infections In Elimination Settings

Funding Amount
$101,877.00
Summary
The malaria elimination agenda will require the development of novel, field applicable diagnostic tools to detect asymptomatic carriers of P.falciparum and non-falciparum malaria infections. Loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) has been demonstrated to be a novel, sensitive, specific nucleic acid amplification technique. My project aims to optimise LAMP into a high-throughput field applicable molecular diagnostic tool capable of diagnosing malaria in elimination settings
Community Treatment Intervention With Ivermectin To Reduce The Prevalence Of Scabies And Strongyloides
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$109,046.00
Summary
Scabies and strongyloides are endemic in many remote East Arnhem Aboriginal communities. To reduce the prevalence of these parasitic infections a community treatment intervention will be undertaken using the drug Ivermectin. The introduction of this innovative drug treatment regime for both scabies and strongyloides will be a first in Australia.
A vaccine against the bacteria Group A streptococcus (‘strep’) could prevent common minor infections like sore throat and school sores as well as deadly ones like necrotising fasciitis (‘flesh eating disease’). It would also reduce long-term heart (rheumatic heart disease) and kidney problems. We are going to try and deliberately give a sore throat to adult volunteers under very close medical supervision so that we can learn more about immunity to strep and to help make and test new vaccines.
The Primary HIV Combined United Database (PCUD) is the largest database of patients with primary HIV infection in Australia. Dating back to 1983, it collects data from people with HIV seroconversion. Primary HIV infection, or seroconversion provides a unique opportunity to study HIV throughout its natural history. Individualizing Cytomegalovirus Preventative Strategies Following Solid Organ Transplantation: A Precision Medicine Approach
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$128,224.00
Summary
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is a significant contributor to poor outcomes following solid organ transplantation. Current preventative strategies are somewhat effective but treat groups of patients similarly rather than targeting the individual, so many patients are treated unnecessarily & breakthrough disease still occurs. We propose a program of research directed towards individualizing CMV prevention strategies in solid organ transplant recipients, incorporating new diagnostic tests.
Antiretroviral drugs reduce morbidity and mortality for people living with HIV however there is currently no cure for HIV. I will undertake a series of studies that will contribute to HIV cure research in Australia. This includes describing novel strategies to identify and measure residual dormant HIV in individuals on suppressive antiretroviral therapy, determining the effect of cancer drugs on dormant HIV, and exploring the attitudes of people living with HIV towards cure research.
Primaquine Radical Cure Of Plasmodium Vivax Malaria: A Risk-benefit Analysis
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$122,714.00
Summary
Vivax malaria causes significant morbidity with over 100 million clinical cases each year and can cause a relapsing illness and chronic anaemia. The only available radical cure of P. vivax requires administration of primaquine, which can cause severe haemolysis in some patients. Our research aims to determine the risks and benefits of giving primaquine to cure vivax malaria using data from meta-analyses of published clinical trials and individual patient results from large multicentre trials.
Factors That Influence Disease Severity In Tuberculosis
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$149,076.00
Summary
Tuberculosis (TB) is a major global health problem and is one of the leading causes of death from an infectious disease worldwide. The severity of disease that occurs with TB is dependent on many complex factors including the infected person’s immune system and factors related to the TB organism itself. This research will determine the key factors that cause severe disease in TB which will translate into improved care of TB patients and enhance further research in this field.
