Summary
Neisseria gonorrhoeae, the pathogen that causes gonorrhoea, has developed resistance to multiple classes of antibiotics. The last remaining class of antibiotics that can successfully be used for general treatment of gonorrhoea is extended spectrum cephalosporins (ESCs). However, we are now starting to see Neisseria gonorrhoeae isolates with early signs of ESC resistance. Summary
We have recently identified a novel Hepatitis B virus (HBV) genotype (C4) circulating in Northern Territory (NT) Indigenous communities. Concurrently, epidemiological studies suggest that the HBV vaccine may not be working well and that there are high rates of liver cancer due to HBV in these communities. Our project will determine if HBV/C4 is linked to poor vaccine responses and accelerated liver disease, with implications for HBV vaccine strategy and clinical management of HBV/C4 infections.

Chronic Kidney Disease is a growing public health concern in Australia, especially among Aboriginal populations. It is associated with progression to end stage kidney disease requiring dialysis, cardiovascular disease burden and high mortality. This study will use a randomised controlled trial design to determine if comprehensive periodontal therapy reduces progression of kidney disease among Aboriginal adults with chronic kidney disease residing in Central Australia.

Summary
Prevalence of hepatitis C infection within the Aboriginal population is among the highest of any identifiable population in Australia. Highly effective, direct-acting antiviral (DAA) therapy, and their listing on the PBS in 2016 has revolutionised HCV clinical management in Australia. The SCALE-C study will evaluate an established test and treat model to rapidly scale-up DAA within four Aboriginal communities to determine both impact on community prevalence and ongoing transmission.

Summary
The study will describe long-term impacts on important health and social outcomes of restricting alcohol in Cape York, Queensland. It will assess the impacts and cost-effectiveness of the Queensland Government’s Alcohol Management Plans implemented from 2002-03. The researchers will use de-identified data on injury, violence, health and social indicators. The study will map whether AMP components were delivered as promised and the extent to which they were welcomed by Cape York communities.
The Gudaga Study is a unique study of Aboriginal children in an urban environment on the eastern seaboard of Australia. Children were recruited at birth and have been followed up at 6-monthly intervals to age 5 years. This research aims to describe the health, early learning and service context of these urban Aboriginal children from 5 to 9 years. Detailed longitudinal data on Aboriginal children's early life experiences have not previously been collected in an urban setting.

Summary
Young children of Indigenous communities and developing countries are often hospitalised for pneumonia and have high risk of subsequent chronic disease. Our international study will determine if a longer duration of antibiotics (compared to shorter duration) improves the short and long term clinical outcomes of children hospitalised for pneumonia. We will look for unique markers that may predict those who will develop chronic lung disease. Our study will influence future guidelines on pneumonia.
