Summary
Sustainable Futures through Understanding Past Human Responses to Environmental Change. This Network brings together researchers within archaeology and environmental sciences to develop cross-disciplinary and internationally comparative approaches to understanding past human responses to rapid environmental change. Integration of skills and perspectives from the Humanities and Sciences will create a generation of scholars able to work across different theoretical frameworks to formulate credible ....Sustainable Futures through Understanding Past Human Responses to Environmental Change. This Network brings together researchers within archaeology and environmental sciences to develop cross-disciplinary and internationally comparative approaches to understanding past human responses to rapid environmental change. Integration of skills and perspectives from the Humanities and Sciences will create a generation of scholars able to work across different theoretical frameworks to formulate credible responses to the challenge of creating sustainable societies in a changing world. Development and application of the Uranium-series method for dating ancient rock engravings. Radiocarbon dating has been used to establish the age of relatively recent Australian rock art, but the ages of ancient engravings cannot be measured beyond the limit of this method. Comparative radiocarbon and uranium-series assays will be made on pairs of test samples collected from natural mineral deposits at engraving locations constrained by the ages of lakes, lava flows, sedimentary deposits or ic ....Development and application of the Uranium-series method for dating ancient rock engravings. The Sir Edward Pellew Group of Islands, Gulf of Carpentaria Archaeological Project. This field-based project investigates patterns of past Aboriginal island use in the south-west Gulf of Carpentaria. It addresses the nature and chronology of island habitation, and how people in the Gulf responded to the post-glacial sea level rise. Did people in northern Australia become stranded on islands in the mid-Holocene as they did on Flinders and Kangaroos Islands in the south, or were watercraft alread ....The Sir Edward Pellew Group of Islands, Gulf of Carpentaria Archaeological Project. Technology and behavioural evolution in late Pleistocene Africa, Europe and Australia. Many of the behaviours which distinguish Homo sapiens from other species first appeared in the late Pleistocene, raising the issue of whether our cognitive capacity changed significantly in this period. This project will use recent advances developed by Australian researchers to help resolve this cornerstone issue in human behavioural evolution. The recognition, interpretation and management of significant rock art and related dreaming (Jukurrpa) sites on the Canning Stock Route, Western Australia. The Canning Stock Route is an iconic linear transect of profound importance to a variety of parties: the original inhabitants of the Western Desert, surveyors and drovers who used it in the 20th century and more recently tourists and outback adventurers. Systematic documentation, mapping and synthesis of Indigenous cultural values of the Cann ....The recognition, interpretation and management of significant rock art and related dreaming (Jukurrpa) sites on the Canning Stock Route, Western Australia. Results will substantially enhance the power of explanations for the Australian backed artefact proliferation, a key archaeological signature of cultural change in ancient Aboriginal society. A solution to the puzzle of why those artefacts were frequently made during one period in the past will be of interest to all researchers concerned with the historical development of Aboriginal societies, and to Aboriginal people. Light islands in a sea of dark rainforest: Human influence on fire, climate and biodiversity in the Australian tropics. A key outcome will be an informed framework for protecting and enhancing biodiversity in the face of global warming.
