Summary
Pushing the limits of fluorescence microscopy with adaptive optics. This project aims to establish an adaptive optics, super-resolution optical microscopy facility to image cellular events with the highest possible spatial resolution, in a whole cell or tissue context. Sophisticated computer-controlled deformable mirrors will be used to correct the way light is distorted as it passes through specimens, thereby overcoming aberrations found in thick and complex samples. This adaptive optics system will enable researchers to study complex behaviour of biological specimens, at the optical resolution limit in plant and animal tissues, leading to basic biology and biotechnology outcomes in biofuels, biomaterials and biomedicines.Read moreRead less

This project aims to establish an environmental radioactivity research centre, equipped with ultra-low background and high-resolution alpha and gamma spectrometry systems, radon detectors and radium delayed coincidence counters. The centre will address a critical demand in Australia for precise analysis of a large suite of natural and artificial radionuclides, which will be used as tracers and chronological tools to investigate key questions in oceanography and the mining and energy, archaeological, agricultural, and forestry sectors. The facility is expected to substantially increase expertise and training in radionuclides in Australia, and promote high-level research collaborations and outputs of both national and international significance. Major outcomes of the proposed facility include better understanding of how oceans regulate climate and improved capacity to assess effects of radiation on natural ecosystems.Read moreRead less

A facility for quantification and isotopic analysis of trace gases. This project aims to develop a new facility for the analysis of trace gases, including nitrous oxide, methane, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and nitric oxide. This will provide two new capabilities for Australia: 1. It will further our ability to study how microbes cycle trace gases across the continuum from arid soils to the coastal ocean; 2. It will allow us to better understand microbial reactions that remove nitrogen pollution. ....A facility for quantification and isotopic analysis of trace gases. This will provide two new capabilities for Australia: 1. It will further our ability to study how microbes cycle trace gases across the continuum from arid soils to the coastal ocean; 2. It will allow us to better understand microbial reactions that remove nitrogen pollution. This will allow us to better understand, monitor and manage microbial processes within soils, sediments, and waters that undertake key ecosystem services, including removal of nitrogen and pollutant gases.
