Enterprising Chinese Australians and the diaspora networks, 1890-1949. From the late 19th century to the present, Chinese Australian businesses and merchants have played an important but under-acknowledged role in bilateral trade and investment. This project aims to provide the first systematic study of how Chinese Australian enterprises and diasporic networks were developed from the late 19th to the early 20th century. Little excavation has been carried out there in recent decades, and almost none using modern high resolution recovery techniques. The genetics of four ancient 'Kings' of Sahul and Sunda. This project aims to recover all the genetic information from four ancient humans. Two of these iconic specimens come from Australia and two from Malaysia. We will sequence the entire DNA (genomes) and proteins (proteome) of Mungo Man (Willandra), the Yidinji King (Cairns), the Deep Skull (Borneo) and the Bewah specimen (Malaysian Peninsula). Confocal microscope for high-resolution microtopographic analysis of surfaces in historical, forensic and polymer sciences. High-resolution analyses of microscopic patterns on surfaces using confocal microscopy can provide vital clues into the nature of ancient diets and environments, adaptive evolution, weapons used in crimes, and properties of polymers. This instrument will heighten Australia’s capacity for world-leading research in areas of major national importance.
A long history of foster care in Australia: hidden stories of growing up in foster care in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Foster care has been the most widely used means to provide for vulnerable children in Australia and yet little is known about the practice. This project will make a significant contribution toward shaping the future of out-of-home care in Australia by making available the first national history of foster care.
