How dark matter influences the formation and evolution of galaxies is to this day an outstanding question in astrophysics. To answer it, world-class facilities and a unique combination of observations and theory are required. This DP team, a world-class team of observers and theorists, will tackle this question by leveraging on two multi-million dollar projects: the MAGPI galaxy survey and the hydrodynamical simulations suite EAGLE-XL. MAGPI will deliver exquisite kinematics for hundreds of galaxies in the middle ages of the Universe, providing a view to the effect of dark matter on galaxies at this critical time, while EAGLE-XL represents the technological frontier in simulations and provides the best interpretative framework for MAGPI.Read moreRead less

The overwhelming majority of black holes are found in an extremely faint quiescent state. This project aims to improve understandings of this large population of black holes, determining the geometry of the inflowing gas, the source of the faint X-ray emission, and the fraction of energy pumped outwards in fast-moving jets. Building on recent ground-breaking results, this project aims to conduct a survey to detect a new population of black holes in dense star clusters, providing new laboratories to explore accretion physics. It aims to measure the distances of the black holes and their motion through space, test evidence for the existence of event horizons, and provide new insights into how black holes form and how they affect their surroundings.Read moreRead less

Gas in the Cosmic Web: feeding and feedback of galaxies. This project aims to understand the complete cycle of gas in galaxies: from the process of feeding galaxies, going through star formation, to the process of outflowing gas from galaxies. This requires a full physical description of the inflow of gas from filaments going through the halo until reaching galaxies, the process of star formation in a multi-phase gas medium, and the effect energetic events have on the gas content of galaxies. This requires a full physical description of the inflow of gas from filaments going through the halo until reaching galaxies, the process of star formation in a multi-phase gas medium, and the effect energetic events have on the gas content of galaxies. This project in the field of extragalactic astrophysics is designed to complement major observational efforts in Australia, such as the Square Kilometre Array and its Pathfinder, as it will provide simulations with full physical descriptions of the neutral gas in the Universe.Read moreRead less

Radio astronomy is entering a new era, driven by technological advances that make rapid surveys of the sky possible. As leaders of three major surveys for the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) telescope, we will explore three new dimensions of astronomy: searching for transient sources, detecting faint galaxies and investigating cosmic magnetism. The project will put Australian astronomers at the forefront of international research. In addition to novel scientific results we will produce data resources and software that will be critical for future Square Kilometre Array projects. These will be available online to amateur astronomers and the general public. We will train the next generation of astronomers with the skills required to make breakthrough discoveries.Read moreRead less

High quality lattice mismatched semiconductor heterostructures are core enabling technologies for next generation electronic and optoelectronic devices with new functions and features such as monolithic integration, lower production costs, larger wafer size, and better system robustness. This project will generate new science on defect generation in lattice mismatched hetero-epitaxy with the aim of developing novel strategies for their minimisation. The direct outcome will be higher quality HgCdTe materials on lattice mismatched Si or III-V substrates with defect density low enough for fabricating high performance mid-wave and long-wave infrared arrays with features of lower cost, larger array format size, and higher operating temperature.Read moreRead less
Unveiling the first billion years: enabling epoch of reionisation science. This project aims to deliver detections and exploration of the Epoch of Reionisation (EoR) through observation of the 21 cm hydrogen emission line from gas in the first billion years of the Universe. This project aims to deliver detections and exploration of the Epoch of Reionisation (EoR) through observation of the 21 cm hydrogen emission line from gas in the first billion years of the Universe. The EoR and Cosmic Dawn mark the two remaining unobserved periods in the history of the Universe. Together, they are witness to the formation, birth and illumination of the first stars, galaxies and x-ray sources, and the consequent transformation of the intergalactic medium from a cold, neutral fog of hydrogen, to a heated, ionised canvas for the luminous Universe. The 21cm neutral hydrogen radio signal maps the astrophysics and cosmology of the first billion years, providing a direct tracer of their evolution and spatial distribution. The project will deliver advances in early Universe physics by circumventing limitations of current experiments, and will deliver lasting scientific and technological breakthroughs.Read moreRead less

This project aims to improve our knowledge of the Moon, including its surface processes, interior structure, modification by geological processes and creation and evolution. The Moon preserves the longest and cleanest records of surface geology in the Solar System’s history, unlike the Earth. The lunar crust should exhibit strong heterogeneity in density (both porosity and composition) given its complex history of impact bombardment and volcanism. This project aims to determine radial and lateral heterogeneity in density and porosity within the Moon's crust, by analysing Gravity Recovery And Interior Laboratory gravity and spacecraft tracking data, Lunar Orbiter Laser Altimeter topography and in situ Apollo seismological data.Read moreRead less
