Using unique Australian-built fibre-positioning technologies, the Fellowship will measure the distances to 2 million galaxies, transforming our understanding of dark matter on the scales of galaxies, galaxy groups, and filaments – the largest structures that exist. There are two specific goals: (i) to test precise predictions of the leading cold dark matter model by constructing dark-matter halo catalogues based on the motions of galaxies measured to unprecedented accuracy; and (ii) to solve the long-standing "missing mass" problem by measuring the extent of the plasma, neutral gas, and stellar contents within these halos. Both programs will capitalise on our strategic engagement with the European Southern Observatory.Read moreRead less

This project aims to develop next generation construction of multi-hazard resilient structures for the safety and wellbeing of the public, society and economy, as well as structural health monitoring techniques for effective engineering asset management. Sustainable infrastructure development involves the use of green materials to reduce greenhouse gas emission, and new technologies to reduce construction and life-cycle maintenance cost. The project will use new green materials and techniques to prefabricate structural components which can be easily assembled and dismantled to meet the requirement for adaptation to technology advancement, urban planning and climate change. The project will advance the construction practice for sustainable infrastructure development.Read moreRead less

This Fellowship plans to study how transformative work design promotes meaningful, healthy, and productive work. The ‘what, how, where, when, and who’ of work is changing: the digital revolution is reconfiguring work processes more rapidly and on a much larger scale than ever before, and the demography of the workforce is profoundly shifting. Work design is a crucial but neglected strategy for optimising health, for unleashing employee talent, and for creating agile and effective organisations. Anticipated outcomes include a new theory on the future of work, a national longitudinal study on how work design fosters critical human development, field interventions, and evidence-based collaboratory activities.Read moreRead less

How the Earth works - toward building a new tectonic paradigm: This fellowship project aims to build on the latest technological and conceptual advances to establish the patterns of Earth evolution, and use this information to examine a ground-breaking geodynamic hypothesis which links cyclic plate aggregation and dispersion to deep Earth processes. Half a century after the inception of plate tectonics theory, we are still unsure how the Earth 'engine' works, particularly the forces that drive plate tectonics. The project involves extensive national and international collaboration to potentially create a paradigm shift in our understanding of global tectonics, and hopes to contribute to an understanding of the formation and distribution of Earth resources to provide a conceptual framework for their exploration.Read moreRead less

This project aims to unlock a hidden record of our planet’s past and the life it supported, using a novel approach with benefits for environment and industry. Soft tissues preserved in sedimentary concretion fossils will be analysed, extending the traditional inorganic fossil framework of major evolutionary events. Understanding the biofilm entombment and preservation mechanisms responsible for this unique organic fossil archive will extend our knowledge of microbial functionality. Expected outcomes from this new way of interpreting our planet’s past, include improved understanding of extinction events, environmental change and adaptation, with potential benefits in ecosystem management, resource exploration and biofilm uses.Read moreRead less

This project enhances Australia as a world leader in the field of mathematical analysis, focusing on regularity and qualitative properties of solutions of partial differential equations and nonlocal problems, and solving very challenging research questions in a key strategic area of international science.
The broad applicability of the results constitutes a very fertile ground for cross-disciplinary interactions with scientists of other disciplines.
A new research team based in Western Australia will be founded, connecting world leaders and talented early career researchers, providing an ideal training environment for students and PostDocs, offering an excellent image of the scientific community and developing strategic fields of knowledge.Read moreRead less

This project aims to establish the origin and evolution of the continental crust and its role in the long term development of the Earth system. The continental crust hosts the resources on which we depend and its evolution controls the environment in which we live. The crust’s record (including resources) is episodic in space and time, but the origin of this periodicity is unresolved. Building on recent advances on crustal development, the fellowship would work to resolve the origin of the episodic age pattern, which affects the distribution of mineral systems and their prospectivity.Read moreRead less

Wild species host genetic diversity, providing sources of disease resistance, while the narrow genetic base of crop varieties leads to an increasing reliance on the unsustainable application of chemical fungicides. Here I will apply the latest genomics approaches to characterise disease resistance gene diversity across the plant kingdom. Comparison of gene diversity within and between plant families will improve our understanding of resistance gene evolution in wild species and the impact of domestication and breeding on resistance gene diversity. Translation of this knowledge will support breeding for crop resilience, leading to durable resistance and more sustainable crop productionRead moreRead less

This project will bring innovative science and Indigenous knowledge together to develop new understandings of the 60,000 year custodianship of Australian deserts. The archaeology will focus on the Ningaloo coast, Pilbara and Western Desert. This region is experiencing expansion in resource extraction, energy production and tourism, key to Australia's post-COVID recovery. This globally significant human record is poorly documented and at risk, as seen in the recent loss of Juukan Caves. The Desert People programme will work with Traditional Owners and use novel techniques to document places of the highest value for their management and protection. This will result in vastly improved planning outcomes and underwrite new regional economies. Read moreRead less
