The impact of insecure residency on adaptation of refugees in Australia. This project will conduct a longitudinal investigation of the psychosocial adaptation of refugees with insecure and secure residency over a period of three years. This project will identify longitudinal trajectories of adaptation in refugees with insecure and secure residency, investigate flashpoints where refugees’ psychological adaptation deteriorates or improves, and investigate psychological mechanisms underpinning adaptation pathways. Findings could significantly advance knowledge about the adaptation of refugees and help refugees to make a positive social and economic contribution to Australia.Read moreRead less

This project is significant and innovative as it will enhance current understandings of the experience Indigenous communities have with infectious diseases. To date there have been no significant qualitative studies that examine the perceptions Indigenous communities have about infectious disease treatment interventions that draw on their current knowledge, experiences and on health, functionality and well-being. This study will develop a model that Indigenous communities, clinicians, policy makers and researchers can use to guide the implementation of sustainable infectious disease interventions. The outcomes of this project will help guide, inform and improve future infectious disease intervention strategies and programs.Read moreRead less
Safety management system for heavy vehicle transport. Crashes involving heavy vehicles result in around 330 deaths, over 3000 serious injuries annually, and cost over $6 billion per year. If a 10% reduction in casualty truck crashes were to result from this study, the cost benefit ratio would be around 200 to 1.Read moreRead less

A national benefit will be the contribution of evidence about the feasibility, utility and potential effectiveness of individual and family-based interventions for reducing alcohol-related harms and improving family functioning among Indigenous Australians. Community level benefits will include, firstly, the strengthened role and capability of participating health services and staff to utilise evidence based approaches to support Indigenous individuals and families dealing with alcohol problems. Secondly, Indigenous individuals and families participating in the Community Reinforcement and Family-based Training intervention will acquire the requisite skills and knowledge to manage the alcohol problems affecting them.Read moreRead less
Examining organisational complexity and clinical risk to improve hospital patients' safety. Improving communicative practices will reduce the massive rate and cost of medication errors and hospital-acquired infections. Current costs of hospital-caused incidents are around AU$2 billion per year. These costs are likely to rise further because hospitals are becoming busier, more culturally and linguistically diverse, less generously resourced per patient, and more technologically capable of keeping sicker patients alive for longer, leading to increased clinical risk and more incidents. This project could save around 20% of the total cost of hospital operations by reducing lengths of stay, lowering re-admission rates and ensuring better deployment of clinical resources.Read moreRead less

Each year, approximately $17 million is allocated to women at risk to assist with the process of settlement; however, there is a paucity of research to inform settlement practice specific to this group. This project aims to understand the determinants of psychosocial wellbeing for women-at-risk during settlement and to draw upon the ecological model of community psychology to inform the design and delivery of settlement services for this group.Read moreRead less

This project aims to provide the first in-depth coordinated critical public health examination of an unregulated and 'covert' area of health and treatment seeking behaviour - complementary self-medication (CAM SM) use in later life. It will focus on healthy ageing and living with chronic illness and draw upon fieldwork with Indigenous, non-Indigenous and culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities. This project aims to identify the challenges of, and possibilities for, 'covert' CAM SM use in later life. It will provide an evidence-base to inform safe, effective care and policy for older Australians and generate novel analyses to provide significant advances and new directions for public health scholarship with regards to chronic illness and community health in later life.Read moreRead less

This project aims to explore the role that food prepared outside the home versus within the home plays in the diets of young adults. The project plans to use data mining to understand where, when and with whom young adults buy food, and the nutritional composition and overall contribution to diet of these foods. The project will use a newly designed and tested Smartphone application to transform data collection and processing, and enable continuous digital photography. The knowledge gained is intended to form the evidence base for formulation of policy and electronic and mobile-health promotion to reverse the problem of young adults gaining more weight than any other group in Australia.Read moreRead less

End of life care provides an ideal framework in which to explore the principle of individual autonomy and consumer decision making. Older people at a high risk of dying in 6 months will be recruited from acute care wards, and asked about preferences for involvement in end of life decision making in a standardised interview survey. Surrogate decision makers and physicians will be asked to answer the same questions from the patient's perspective (namely what they think the patient wants). Findings will suggest ways end of life care can be better tailored so that patients can participate in decisions and receive care that is consistent with their wishes.Read moreRead less

This project aims to study male sex workers’ relationships with their clients to evaluate how individual agency mitigates risks and dangers. Developments in biomedical HIV prevention can prevent infections but may also change sexual norms and the sexual marketplace for male sex workers and their clients. These changes align with rising rates of crystal methamphetamine use and online technologies in commercial sex encounters. As male sex work changes, a gap exists in understanding how men negotiate commercial sex encounters. This project expects to inform policies and practices to protect male sex workers’ health and safety, and provide public health information about HIV prevention and illicit drug use in sex work.Read moreRead less
