Strategies for the detection of designer steroids in greyhounds. This project aims to develop strategies to detect designer steroids in racing greyhounds to safeguard industry integrity and animal welfare. These strategies include in vivo and comparative in vitro studies of steroid metabolism, mass-spectrometric elucidation of metabolite structures, and synthesis of putative steroid metabolites with different stereochemistries and oxidation patterns as reference materials. This project will use major metabolites identified by these studies to develop analytical procedures to test for drug abuse at greyhound race meetings. The project will target twelve readily available designer steroid supplements that have significant risk of abuse.Read moreRead less

Chemical analyses by mass spectrometers underpin key Australian economic sectors, particularly minerals and agriculture. The quadrupole inductively-coupled-plasma mass-spectrometer has seen a particular rise in prominence over last 25 years. In this collaboration between mass spectrometrists and the leading instrument designer, we will improve the linearity of its detection system for more precise and accurate data. Better elemental and isotope ratio data from these high-throughput instruments will open up new real-world applications in many areas of Australian interest, such as biosecurity, forensics, groundwater management, and drug design. The research will also inform design of the next generation instruments by the industry partner.Read moreRead less

Pushing the Boundaries of Multi-modal Biospectroscopic Microscopies. In order to understand the fundamentals of life processes, diseases, and their treatments, it is essential to probe fundamental changes in molecular processes in cells, tissues and whole organisms. In order to understand the fundamentals of life processes, diseases, and their treatments, it is essential to probe fundamental changes in molecular processes in cells, tissues and whole organisms. Much of our understanding of these processes has involved the introduction of chemical probes for biospectroscopy, but these have inherent problems because the probe can often change the biochemistry that is being probed. This project will push the boundaries of a variety of micro and nano "probe-free" microscopies to provide fundamental insights into these life processes, which could ultimately lead to improvements in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diseases.Read moreRead less

The Australian Federal Government through the 'Smart Farming' initiative highlights the need for improved multidisciplinary measures in order to remain at the global forefront of the invention and adoption of technology. This multidisciplinary project (entomology, biotechnology, analytical chemistry and genomics) will rapidly inform the management of fly strike on an important Australian resource merino sheep. This will build the key biochemical data in order to develop a novel fly lure technology (at scale) to be used on farm delivering national benefit through improved animal welfare and safety considerations for producers, and will establish the best approach to disseminate this scientific information to stakeholders such as farmers.Read moreRead less

This project aims to fill the critical gap in 3-D imaging and compositional characterisation of metals, functional materials, polymers, biomaterials, ceramics and minerals at micro- and nano-scales. Coupling of dual column focused ion beam microscopy with secondary ion mass spectroscopy analysis will is designed to overcome the long-standing limitation of light and trace element analysis in scanning electron microscopes. This facility would provide Australian researchers with a new capability of characterising light and trace elements using scanning electron microscopy. Along with the ability to characterise a diverse range of materials in 3-D, the new system would enable fabrication of functional nanoscale devices for nanotechnology, biomedical and energy applications. Fragments of the Earth's mantle (xenoliths), transported to surface by deep-seated volcanics, record the injection of fluids through formation of volatile-bearing minerals (mantle metasomatism). This project will 1) test the hypothesis that timescales of mantle volatile storage can be determined using noble gas (laser probe) dating techniques, and 2) determine the sources and processes involved in volatile storage, using halogen and noble gas geochemistry. A successful outcome will establish unique methods for dating mantle metasomatic events and determine the relationship between mantle and crust melting episodes, thus providing critical constraints on mantle evolution and Earth degassing models.
