This project aims to develop comparative research into Indigenous and settler experiences in Australasia and North America in order to discover new connections or distinctions between the two regions for both public and academic audiences. The project will centre on a major exhibition with a focus on biography and life representation and will develop new methodologies for examining the shared or different histories of complex indigenous-settler relations across "New World" sites. The expected outcomes of this project are to promote a deeper appreciation of Australia’s place in a Pacific world with as yet unexplored links to the Americas, and also to model new ways for art history and socio-cultural history to come together to explicate a shared, complicated past.Read moreRead less
Bauhaus Australia: Transforming Education in Art, Architecture and Design. This project aims to examine the influence of Bauhaus-inspired émigrés on Australian cultural life. This project aims to examine the influence of Bauhaus-inspired émigrés on Australian cultural life. An under-examined but profound influence on Australian cultural history was the forced migration of émigré and refugee modernists from Germany and central Europe, who transformed art, architectural and design education from the 1930s to the 1970s. German and central European training, inspired by the Bauhaus, centred on systematic approaches to pictorial method and design, colour theory and art education, all underwritten by an all-encompassing social ambition. This project aims to provide a new cross-disciplinary history of modernism in Australia that shifts focus from solo contributions to the networks of education, where modernism’s impact was most public, widespread and influential.Read moreRead less
Orientalism of the Mediterranean shore: art and place from Tunis to Marseille. This project focuses on new ways of thinking about how art links North Africa and Europe. New light on Cambodia’s Dark Age (1350 - 1750). This project aims to conduct the first systematic archaeological investigations of Cambodian Middle Period capitals on the banks of the Mekong and Tonle Sap arterial rivers between 1350 and 1750. Whilst the decline of Angkor is one of the most significant events in the history of Southeast Asia, we do not have a precise date for the event that involved the relocation of many hundreds of thousands of people. By determining when the Kings of Angkor moved to the southern capitals we will clarify the end of Angkor, retrieve Cambodian history from a perceived Dark Age, and reveal critical linkages between the celebrated Angkorian past and modern and contemporary Cambodia.Read moreRead less
The Ateliers of Angkor: sculpture workshops of an empire (Cambodia, 9th to 13th centuries CE). Australia is dedicated to building the capacity of developing countries to look after their World Heritage sites. The collaboration of Australian, Cambodian and international researchers will expand these relationships and help to preserve Angkor's World Heritage value by revealing the work-sites where the world-famous sculptures were created.
Immortal Egypt: cultural tradition and transition during the first intermediate period at Meir. The project will gain new knowledge about the development of ancient Egyptian culture by examining well-preserved tombs dating from the Old through to the Middle Kingdom periods at the cemetery of Meir and analysing the ways in which art, architecture, and socio-religious institutions at the site were maintained or altered over a span of 900 years.
Measuring meaning in Egyptian art: A new approach to an intractable problem. This project aims to produce new insights into the meaning of Eqyptian tomb art. Tomb paintings are a primary source of information about ancient Egyptian life, but what was the original purpose of this art? Previous hypotheses have proposed a range of personal, social or religious functions, but the question remains unresolved. The project aims to break through this impasse by testing the validity of the most comprehensive theory to date via an innovative visual and statistical analysis of wall paintings at the Middle Kingdom site of Beni Hassan. The results are expected to bring greater clarity to our understanding of Egyptian art, and so allow an objective evaluation of its use as a historical document.Read moreRead less

The project aims to address political and social shifts in the ancient Egyptian early Middle Kingdom c. 4000 years ago. For the first time, and with exclusive study concessions from the government of Egypt, material data of the two most significant cemeteries of the period will be investigated. The project not only expects to generate new knowledge about human interaction during crisis but will utilise interdisciplinary research strategies to investigate the emerging opportunities, such as social mobility, for individuals from all strata of society. It will provide significant benefits such as understanding the mechanics of post-crisis political leadership and the cultural impact that enabled the classical period of ancient Egypt to emerge.Read moreRead less
