Summary
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the most common neurodegenerative disease affecting young adults. It is a disease that kills myelin cells, which are important support cells for neurons and critical for neuronal function. This research investigates the role of a specific signaling pathway with respect to myelin cell production and repair with the ultimate aim of identifying regenerative therapeutics for MS.

Ghrelin is a hormone that primarily targets the brain to increase food intake and body weight. It has evolved to prevent starvation during periods of negative energy balance by promoting energy intake and storage. We have identified central ghrelin resistance in diet-induced obesity (DIO) as a novel disturbed neuroendocrine system that restricts excessive food intake. Summary
Neurocognitive decline in Parkinson's disease refers to the non-motor symptoms of the disease; these symptoms have increasingly become recognised as both prevalent, and evolving early in the disease course. While motor symptoms are treated with drugs and electrodes, the changes to patients cognition, the progressive dementia, the psychosis and other symptoms progress with poor treatment. This research is designed to identify and understand targets so better treatments can be created.
Investigation Of The Clinical Utility Of The Nintendo Wii_ Gaming System For Assessment And Rehabilitation Of Balance Post-stroke
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$75,660.00
Summary
The assessment and treatment of balance problems following stroke is a primary focus for physiotherapists working in this field. The Nintendo Wii_, a commercially available active gaming system, is a potentially useful tool for stroke rehabilitation. This research will investigate the effectiveness of this system to improve balance following stroke as well as examine the clinical utility of the Wii Balance Board_, with custom-designed software, for assessment of balance in stroke patients.
