Will geopolymer concretes stand the test of time? In developing new 'green' materials to replace traditional, high-carbon dioxide cements and concretes, it is essential to show that the new materials will be at least as durable as the traditional options. This project will enable prediction of the durability of low-carbon dioxide geopolymer concrete, using laboratory tests, cutting-edge structural analysis and computations.

The project aims to develop high performance concrete structures using 3D printing techniques. 3D printing of concrete is receiving increasing attention because of its potential use for direct construction of buildings and other complex infrastructures of considerable dimensions and of virtually any shape. This project aims to develop high-performance concrete structures reinforced by multiscale (nano- and micro-fibre) fillers using 3D printing. The project plans to introduce a micro-fibre 3D mesh into the concrete with a ‘knitting’ technique. The outcome of the project may lead to a 60 per cent reduction in current manufacturing cost and reduction of the lead-time for concrete infrastructures.Read moreRead less

This project aims to develop innovative low carbon cement formulations for the Australian construction industry. It will design new binder formulations that include a high level clinker replacement and achieve high early strength by controlling early hydration reactions (< 24 hrs) through combining admixtures. Using geochemistry to improve early hydration, it will use commonly available supplementary cementitious materials to prepare low carbon concrete. This research is expected to transform the Australian construction industry by developing higher performing, more durable structures with dramatically lower embodied carbon dioxide and improved life-cycle costs.Read moreRead less

This project will lead a paradigm shift in concrete mix design methodology, which is currently focused on meeting the mechanical performance objectives of concrete, to a holistic approach that maximises durability of concrete alongside its mechanical performance. The approach is based on a hybrid methodology involving mathematical optimisation of concrete mix based on empirically formulated objective functions for durability properties and mechanical properties. The multi-objective nature of proposed optimisation model will allow simultaneous consideration of several design objectives including: minimising the overall risk of cracking, minimising the permeability; and maximising the rate of strength development. This project aims to develop an intrinsic self-healing concrete using crystalline admixtures for rapid healing of concrete cracking. In marine environments, concrete cracking provides a direct access for chlorides from sea water to the steel reinforcement, leading to early and severe steel corrosion. The self-healing concrete will be designed to address the two main causes of concrete structures deterioration in Australia: early age cracking due to restrained shrinkage and chloride induced steel reinforcement corrosion. The outcomes of this project will drive the advances in developing and applying crystalline admixture-based self-healing concrete to extend the service life of concrete structures and avoid costly repair.Read moreRead less
