Global Climate Change, Carbon Dioxide (CO2), and the Evolution of Life in the Palaeozoic and Early Mesozoic. A critically important problem directly affecting our society is the effects of climate change on our life support systems and environment. But the impacts of climate change and increasing carbon dioxide (CO2) on the Earth's biosphere are not well understood, so much can be learnt from examining past events that have shaped its evolution. Our research will provide important new insights into how life evolved and survived periods of major environmental upheaval in Earth history, especially its responses to large shifts in global temperatures and atmospheric CO2. These outcomes will provide valuable input to help project how future global warming and rapidly increasing carbon dioxide levels will likely impact our modern biosphere.Read moreRead less
The Late Pleistocene Peopling of East Asia and Associated Climate-Environment History. This project will contribute to an environmentally sustainable Australia through understanding the long-term history of climate change centred on the monsoon weather system and the scale and magnitude of environmental change and its long-term impacts on human inhabitants in East Asia and Australasia. It helps to safeguard Australia by enhancing our capacity to interpret and engage with our region through great ....The Late Pleistocene Peopling of East Asia and Associated Climate-Environment History. This project will contribute to an environmentally sustainable Australia through understanding the long-term history of climate change centred on the monsoon weather system and the scale and magnitude of environmental change and its long-term impacts on human inhabitants in East Asia and Australasia. It helps to safeguard Australia by enhancing our capacity to interpret and engage with our region through greater understanding of societies and cultures. It will improve understanding of the long-term history and relationships of major groups of people across our region. Many benefits will derive from scientific, educational and cultural exchange between Australia and our neighbour China.Read moreRead less
Variability in El Niño frequency and intensity over the past 4000 years. Fossil corals contain a rich archive of past climate variability for tropical oceans which can extend the limited instrumental data and increase our understanding of climate sensitivity. Fossil corals contain a rich archive of past climate variability for tropical oceans which can extend the limited instrumental data and increase our understanding of climate sensitivity. El Niño variations in the Pacific have far-reaching impacts on Australian climate, and this project will reconstruct variations in the past in order to better forecast climate sensitivity in the future. It focuses on Christmas Island which is the optimal site to capture El Niño variability at several different time scales, and will lead to a better understanding of atmospheric and oceanic factors that have caused climate variability.Read moreRead less
Antarctic freshwater lake fauna: Palaeobiogeography, palaeoecology and applications to climate change studies. The origins of the Antarctic freshwater fauna are poorly known: Are the species currently extant long-term endemics descended from species present before the formation of the Antarctic ice-cap, or are they recent invaders from more temperate zones? The origins of the Antarctic freshwater fauna are poorly known: Are the species currently extant long-term endemics descended from species present before the formation of the Antarctic ice-cap, or are they recent invaders from more temperate zones? By studying the distribution of faunal remains in the sediments of freshwater lakes, a picture of the development of the fauna in space and time ('palaeobiogeography') will be formed that will allow the Antarctic fauna to be placed in a wider biogeographic context. Changes in the faunal distribution will also be interpreted in terms of lake palaeoecology and climate change.Read moreRead less
