This project proposes a novel approach for identifying roadside fire risks using pattern recognition and computational intelligence techniques. The video data is collected over every state road in Queensland annually, and has the potential to provide a range of value-added products for safer roads. This project aims to develop new techniques for identification of roadside objects so that the data can be automatically analysed allowing the estimation of fire risk factors. The final outcome intends to be techniques for segmentation and classification of roadside objects and estimation of fire risk factors.Read moreRead less

Aviation is a major economic driver both within Australia and overseas, but the aviation industry faces growing challenges from the increase in passengers and changing regulations. To meet these challenges, airports, airlines, government agencies and others need to maximise their efficiency and productivity; however, complex dependencies and differing operational objectives complicate this task. This project aims to develop a real-time, whole-of-system operational performance framework that can help operators in finding and evaluating solutions to maximise throughput, reduce wait times and mitigate flow-on effects. Innovative new video analytic and Bayesian Network based tools are integrated to address the challenges of adaptability and uncertainty.Read moreRead less
Monitoring intuitive expertise in the context of airport security screening. During airport security screening and processing, confusion and error are greatest when systems or contexts are unfamiliar. Poorly designed systems compromise the interactions of airport security personnel and decrease their ability to promptly and accurately respond to situations. During airport security screening and processing, confusion and error are greatest when systems or contexts are unfamiliar. Poorly designed systems compromise the interactions of airport security personnel and decrease their ability to promptly and accurately respond to situations. This project aims to deliver a suite of automated methods to monitor security operator knowledge and engagement, to assess the real-time security screening context, and to detect unusual passenger behaviour at the screening check-point. This monitoring aims to provide new knowledge and techniques to enhance security operator performance, refine the screening process, improve passenger experience and, most critically, ensure safety at Australian airports.Read moreRead less
Airports of the Future. This project will enhance the capabilities of Australian airport operators to design and manage complex airport systems. This project will enhance the capabilities of Australian airport operators to design and manage complex airport systems. Research outcomes will enable the identification of patterns of behaviour and will provide tools to manage airport effectiveness and balance conflicting security, economic and passenger-driven pressures. Outcomes will improve productivity, enhance capabilities for critical infrastructure protection, and lessen the cost of mandated security, estimated to grow to $152M by 2010 for the five major Australian airports. The deliverables of this project will be transferable to other complex socio-technical systems providing the potential to transform a range of Australian critical infrastructure and transportation hubs.Read moreRead less
Precise recognition for automated harvesting and grading of strawberries. This project aims to improve automated strawberry harvesting to enable industrial harvesters to be deployed for commercial use and to lift the productivity of the Australian fruit industry. Current colour-based fruit recognition techniques have intrinsic limitations in meeting the need ....Precise recognition for automated harvesting and grading of strawberries. This project aims to improve automated strawberry harvesting to enable industrial harvesters to be deployed for commercial use and to lift the productivity of the Australian fruit industry. Precise recognition and grading of strawberries is a major obstacle in developing fully-automated commercial strawberry harvesting systems. Current colour-based fruit recognition techniques have intrinsic limitations in meeting the needs of automatic strawberry harvesting. This project aims to investigate high-level syntactic recognition approaches that embed high-order texture patterns of ripe fruit and hyperspectral analysis techniques to achieve partially occluded fruit recognition and grading of fruit at the level required by commercial production.Read moreRead less
Developing key vision technology for automation of aquaculture factory. This project aims to investigate structural, coloured textural, and hyperspectral analysis approaches to achieve automated lobster molt-cycle staging and classification to the level required for commercial production. High labour cost, water contamination, and disease transmission are major barriers in Australian bay lobster aquaculture inhibiting its large scale production. Automation of the production process and reducing the human contact with animals are of high priority in the development of this Australian-led emerging industry. The project aims to develop technology to bring this world- first aquaculture factory to large scale production, and create new export opportunities for lobsters and production systems.Read moreRead less
Precision Pollination: Data-driven enhancements to boost crop yield. The project aims to transform industrial crop pollination from an intuitive domain to one where decisions are based on sound data and best-practice principles. The project aims to transform industrial crop pollination from an intuitive domain to one where decisions are based on sound data and best-practice principles. It proposes to achieve this modernisation of global pollination practice by developing novel technologies to operate a three-stage loop: honeybee pollination monitoring, simulation-based forecasting, and management. This is intended to ensure that the capability of honeybees to provide essential ecosystem services is informed by transferable, standardised data acquisition and management techniques that maintain bee health and maximise pollination. The anticipated outcomes are higher fruit yields and quality, and a beneficial step-change in industry productivity and profitability.Read moreRead less

The project aims to develop advanced computer-aided analytics systems with the goal to improve the workflow and automation in the pathology industry. Improvements will be achieved by fusing information from both digital images and plain text medical reports. In collaboration with a partner organisation, the project team will field trial the new analytics systems against traditional pathology tests to evaluate both efficacy and reliability. In addition, the project is also aimed to construct a large digital slide databank which will aid training and education. The expected outcome of the project is to perform existing tasks cheaper and more efficiently. Read moreRead less
Application of manifold-based image analysis to identify subtle changes in digitally-captured pathology samples. This project will research and develop advanced computer aided analytics for digital pathology with the aim of automating several common pathology tests. This project should not only greatly increase the speed of pathology tests but should also improve quality, lower costs and improve patient outcomes.
Semantic change detection through large-scale learning. This project aims to develop technologies which understand the content of images before higher-level analysis is performed. This approach is intended to allow more accurate and reliable decisions to be made using automated image analysis than has previously been possible. The project will particularly investigate the detection of change in the contents of an image.
