GeoWulf: An Inference Engine for Complex Earth Systems. The project is to build a `Beowulf' cluster as a platform for solving
complex data inference problems in the Earth sciences, and in
particular the fields of thermochronology, seismology, crustal and
mantle dynamics, and landform evolution. A Beowulf cluster is a

configured to give unprecedented performance/cost ratio. Projects
using the Beowulf facility will combine state-of-the-art computational
techniques recently developed at ANU, and high quality data sets
collected over the past decade to address fundamental questions in
the Geosciences.Read moreRead less

"Network Australia International" will harness the expertise and knowledge of expatriate researchers and tap into their overseas networks. NAI will be a unique portal connecting and re-connecting Australian researchers overseas.
The key objectives of the Network are to:
* identify Australian researchers overseas, especially Young Investigators;
* perform a capability audit on their knowledge, expertise and networks;
* identify potential synergies between Australian and overseas researchers, related to National Research Priorities;
* coordinate collaborative research;
* provide opportunities for Australian postdoctoral fellows overseas;
* communicate and enhance opportunities for permanent and recurring visits by Australian expatriates, and develop new initiatives.

Earth processes over geological timescales cannot be understood outside of a plate tectonic context. However, no standard tool exists to explore the causes and effects of lithosphere-mantle interaction in accordance with past plate configurations. Our aim is to develop a Palaeo-Geographic Information System called EarthByte that will connect the open source and architecture-independent GPlates and GMT software, and implement XML-based service interfaces and databases. EarthByte will create the foundation for an e-geoscience framework for grid-based data access and Earth process modelling by linking geological and geophysical observations to palaeogeographic models for constraining mantle convection and lithospheric deformation.Read moreRead less
