The Australian alumina and aluminium industries contribute over $11 billion export income annually. All refineries, except one, operate in rural areas and are the main economic drivers in these regions. In order to maintain the industry's commitment to reduce the environmental impact of its processes and remain economically sustainable, innovative technologies are required to monitor mercury emissions. The aim of this project is to develop robust sensors, for online monitoring of mercury vapours, that operate under challenging industrial environments. This project will also provide excellent training for young researchers in established international industrial research groups, thereby meeting skill shortages in the Australian resource sector.Read moreRead less

The RSOC technology has the potential to provide a large-scale electrical energy storage solution for the widespread penetration of intermittent renewable energy resources into the electrical grid.Read moreRead less
Mathematical modelling of dye-sensitised titania solar cells: a route to improved efficiency in production. Dye-sensitised titania solar cells (DSCs) provide a technically and economically credible alternative to silicon photovotaic devices. Increasing the efficiency of commercially produced DSCs to 12% from the current production cell efficiency of 6%,will result in significantly lower delivered energy costs than the current alternative photovoltaic devices. This project will develop a mathemat ....Mathematical modelling of dye-sensitised titania solar cells: a route to improved efficiency in production. This project will develop a mathematical model of a DSC as a first stage in the development of a decision support capability for the manufacture of more efficient DSC's. The model will extend existing models to incorporate full transport modelling and side-reactions in the electrolyte and will be validated by experimental work.Read moreRead less
The flotation of oxide minerals using hydroxamate collectors. Australian and world mineral resources are declining in quality as we exploit the richest sulfidic ore deposits. This is increasing our reliance on concentration and beneficiation processes to improve the economics of the selective recovery of minerals from lower grade and, increasingly, oxide or lateritic ore bodies. In addition, greater emphasis is being placed on our environmental stewardship and the need to remove hazardous material from the concentrate streams. This proposal will develop improved methods and techniques that will facilitate better, cleaner separations and recovery of the valuable oxide mineral components using Australian-developed flotation reagents.Read moreRead less
ROBUST SOLID OXIDE FUEL CELL TECHNOLOGY FOR SMALL-SCALE APPLICATIONS. The project aims to develop nano-materials for the next generation planar Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) that will operate at temperatures between 600 and 800°C. The goal is to identify and demonstrate materials that meet the robust requirements for small scale power generators at the 3-5kW scale. The goal is to identify and demonstrate materials that meet the robust requirements for small scale power generators at the 3-5kW scale. It is expected that these will be used in stationary power generation applications, in remote area power supplies, and for providing auxiliary power in vehicles. The work builds on the world-leading position that Ceramic Fuel Cells Ltd. has in planar SOFC technology, utilising micro-analysis and fuel cell expertise at the University of Queensland.Read moreRead less

Supply of potable water to Australia's major urban areas is a major challenge to growth and quality of life. Indirect potable reuse via membranes can address this issue, as it offers an inexpensive and sustainable water supply, as well as leveraging new water sources. However, the potential impact of the generated reject concentrates on aquatic and human health is potentially of large concern. Our project helps address this, by making reject treatment economically and environmentally much more sustainable, and thereby future-proofing the technology. In addition, it develops technology that can be used worldwide to treat other recalcitrant streams (e.g., hospital, tannery, pulp and paper), is highly scalable, and is low in operating cost.Read moreRead less

Accelerating the uptake of renewable energy through new and diverse sources is critical to Australia's commitment to sustainable future, and Australia's energy security. This project will address key issues in commercially emerging Dye Solar Cell (DSC) technology, which has been accepted as a credible avenue to cost effective solar electricity. To date, significant development both in industry and Academia, has resulted in Australia's leading and often pioneering position in this field. The project will maintain and enhance this position through both scientific and commercial outcomes, including opening up new markets for flexible DSC and exporting products and technological solutions through commercial activities of the Partner Organisation.Read moreRead less
