Climate change puts Australia at risk from sea level rise and an increase in the occurrence and intensity of droughts. We need to learn about issues concerning the water cycle that are still poorly understood, such as whether droughts cause a reduction in only surface water or also water stored in underground reservoirs and what happens to ocean waters when thermal expansion causes an increase in sea surface height in some regions but not others. This proposal will provide new and accurate scientific information on the risks of sea level rise through the effects of thermal expansion of the oceans, in particular in shallow coastal zones. It will help us to understand droughts, variations in water resources and groundwater recharge patterns.Read moreRead less
Surface-ground water interactions and increasing salinity in the upper Hunter River. Australia's first salinity trading scheme, to limit impacts of industrial saline wastewater discharges, operates in the Hunter Region, NSW. Despite it, a recent audit suggests stream salinity levels will continue to rise over the next century. No assessment tools are available to identify causes of salinity increases in sub-catchments of the Hunter. This severely limits rehabilitation strategies aimed at addressing river salinity. Current rehabilitation focuses on revegetation of recharge and discharge areas, with limited understanding of the primary local drivers for salinity, and without assessment of whether rehabilitation is addressing or exacerbating problems. This project aims to supply that understanding.Read moreRead less
Biogeochemical drivers of uranium isotope fractionation in regolith and groundwater. Water and soil resources are critical to Australia's present and future health and wealth. This project provides necessary data to increase our understanding groundwater recharge, flow and quality, weathering rates and uranium behaviour in soil and water. It will help delineate the impacts of agricultural activities and climate change. It may also trigger the development of new mineral exploration strategies for ....Biogeochemical drivers of uranium isotope fractionation in regolith and groundwater. A new-generation gas-source radiocarbon system for integrated environmental and archaeological research. An ultra-sensitive radiocarbon analysis system, proposed here, is central to new, multi-institution research into past fluctuations of Australia's climate, natural resources and ecosystems. Focussed on the 40,000 years of human presence, the research is an integrated approach to changes of earth systems in the Australian region. The equipment is a single-stage accelerator mass spectrometer (SS ....A new-generation gas-source radiocarbon system for integrated environmental and archaeological research. Focussed on the 40,000 years of human presence, the research is an integrated approach to changes of earth systems in the Australian region. The equipment is a single-stage accelerator mass spectrometer (SSAMS) with an innovative gas-fed ion source and automated gas-handling system, with simpler processing and smaller samples than present AMS facilities. Future developments include automated multi-sample handling and coupling to microprobe and chromatographic analysers for microscale radiocarbon analysis of complex substances.Read moreRead less
Reactive flow through porous media by micro-imaging. Australia is embarking on the development of major gas fields offshore Western Australia. These developments are very costly and techniques to manage the risk in development are well sought after. This project assists in risk management of tertiary recovery methods and CO2 storage. Further, it can contribute significantly to the accurate forward modelling of storage of hazardous materials and pollution remediation strategies. Acid Sulfate Soils (ASS) can cause major land management and environmental problems. It has been proposed that the linkages between the Sulfur, Nitrogen, and Iron biogeochemical cycles deterrmine the environmental and crop production hazards associated with use of ASS. In order to develop best management practices for ASS, it is important to research those linkages and determine their contribution to fluxes of materials exported from these soils. This project will carry out that research and will transfer results to industry partners to improve land management practices and identify appropriate landuses in ASS landcapes.Read moreRead less

Water is Australia's most limiting resource. This research will contribute to the sustainable management of groundwater resources in the regional and rural areas of the Lower Murrumbidgee catchment, an important agricultural and horticultural region of Australia. Strategies for sustainable use of water resources will be improved by understanding the impacts of irrigation on groundwater quality and aquifer extractions. The project will train new scientists in current and new groundwater techniques and improve strategic linkages between the Industry and University sectors through support of student research and a Linkage Fellowship for the key industry partner participant.Read moreRead less
