Summary
We have different types of infection-fighting white blood - the soliders of the immune system. They can all grow from a single stem cell like a seed grows into a tree. So, by understanding this complex process, new and better therapies for cancer, organ transplantation and infectious disease are constantly emerging. I aim to use a cutting-edge technology called ‘cellular barcoding’ to answer some of the age-old questions about how stem cells grow into white blood cells.

Summary
In bone marrow transplantation, donor immunity can fight the cancer but can also attack healthy tissues, causing graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). We will use two types of cell therapy to treat GVHD. The first study will use a safety switch called inducible capase 9 (iCasp9) to enable the donor immune cells to be rapidly eliminated if GVHD occurs. The second study will use regulatory T cells to treat patients with chronic GVHD. If successful, these treatment approaches will make transplantation ....In bone marrow transplantation, donor immunity can fight the cancer but can also attack healthy tissues, causing graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). Investigating The Gene And Gene Expression Differences In The Cells That Drive Leukemia Development And Relapse In Children With AML

Summary
Current treatments for AML are initially effective at killing the majority of leukemic cells, but the disease often comes back (relapses) due to rare cells that escape treatment and can regenerate the cancer (called leukemic stem cells or LSC for short). This project aims to determine if an individual patient has one, or many kinds of LSC and which kind of LSC is most likely to cause relapse. We believe that this knowledge will lead to new treatments that can target the cells that cause relapse.
Blood clotting in the wrong place at the wrong time is responsible for up to 50% of the morbidity and mortality of the population through diseases such as heart attack, stroke, venous thrombosis. It also contributes to cancer progression and cancer related death. Blood clotting is initiated when a protein on the cell surface known as tissue factor becomes active. We will determine how activation of tissue factor participates in the blood clotting process. This will help in disease prevention.
Cellular And Molecular Determinants That Regulate Osteoblasts At The Endosteal Niche During HSC Mobilisation

Summary
Treatments for leukaemia (e.g. chemotherapy) severely deplete immune and blood cells from patients. Transplantation of new blood forming cells (blood stem cells) into these patients is essential, but challenges are faced with isolating sufficient numbers in ways that preserve their ability to reconstitute the blood post transplant. My research aims to advance understanding of current methods used to isolate these cells and ultimately to improve the success of blood stem cell transplantation.
