Linkage Infrastructure, Equipment And Facilities - Grant ID: LE120100043
Funder
Australian Research Council
Funding Amount
$330,000.00
Summary
Development of an ultra-high speed spinning disk confocal micro-particle image velocimetry (PIV) platform for the investigation of cardiovascular disease . This facility will establish a microscope system specifically designed to investigate the function of blood cells in the context of cardiovascular diseases such as heart attack and stroke.
Heparin-induced Thrombocytopenia And Thrombosis: Better Understanding Of Pathogenesis And Improving Diagnosis And Treatment
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$653,137.00
Summary
Heparin, a widely used drug, can cause an adverse effect which results in a fall of the platelet count and the development of serious thrombosis. This drug complication is mediated by an immune mechanism. This proposal aims to provide a better understanding of the disease mechanism. It also aims to develop a new test that will improve the diagnosis, and to produce a novel drug that will effectively suppress the immune reaction and improve the treatment.
Investigating The Link Between Oxidative Stress And Biomechanical Integrin Activation In Diabetes

National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$653,742.00
Summary
Diabetes represents a serious healthcare problem globally. A large proportion of deaths associated with diabetes can be attributed to the development of blood clots in the circulation of the heart and brain (heart attack/stroke). The blood clotting mechanism is ‘hyperactive’ in diabetes, although the reason for this is not well defined. In this proposal we will investigate a new mechanism promoting blood clots, and will investigate innovative approaches to reduce this clotting mechanism.
Tracking blood and blood products for a healthy start to life. This project will aim to coalesce multiple data sources to track blood and blood products from supply to recipient and improve safe and appropriate blood product transfusions for mothers and newborns. Tracking blood will assist in early identification of adverse outcomes. Identification of at-risk women and babies will allow early prevention and treatment.
A Phase I Study Of Autologous CD19 Specific Chimeric Antigen Receptor T-cells For Therapy Of Relapsed And Refractory B-cell Leukaemia And Lymphoma (The Auto-CAR19 Trial).
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$584,666.00
Summary
Most people with leukaemia and lymphoma who relapse early after chemotherapy die of their disease. Inserting special genes into immune cells can enable them to kill leukaemia and lymphoma and has led to dramatic cures, but the cost of the viral vectors used to make these cells is prohibitively expensive. We will make leukaemia and lymphoma specific immune cells from patients using an inexpensive non-viral system, then administer the immune cells to patients to assess their safety and efficacy.

A Phase I Study Of PiggyBac CD19 Specific Chimeric Antigen Receptor T-cells For Therapy Of Persistent And Relapsed B-cell Leukaemia And Lymphoma Post Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplantation (The CARTELL Study).
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$357,590.00
Summary
Most people with relapsed leukaemia and lymphoma after bone marrow transplant die of their disease. Inserting special genes into immune cells can enable them to kill leukaemia and lymphoma and has led to dramatic cures, but there is little experience in bone marrow transplant patients. We will make leukaemia and lymphoma specific immune cells from normal bone marrow transplant donors, then administer the immune cells to transplant patients to assess their safety and effectiveness.
Drug-induced Immune Thrombocytopenia: Understanding The Disease Mechanisms Is The Key To Better Treatment
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$509,550.00
Summary
Many very commonly used medications cause an allergic reaction in a small number of patients that receive them. The allergic reaction results in platelets being destroyed and puts the patients at risk of bleeding. The patient recovers slowly if the drug is stopped but there is no other treatment and no way to reverse the effect quickly if the patient starts to bleed. This project will try to understand the mechanism of the condition and test a potential treatment.

Infections cause most preventable disease and death in these patients. We will establish multidisciplinary training programmes in clinical and ethics research and build on our expertise in infectious diseases and microbiology, diagnostics, haematology, immunisation, health informatics and bioethics to improve patient outcomes. These outcomes will be translatable to other high-risk patients such as those with cancer and the critically ill.Read moreRead less
