Modelling graph-of-graphs for solving document categorisation problems. Documents in the World Wide Web, such as scientific documents, exhibit a referencing structure as well as being structured objects themselves. This project addresses some inherent limitations of existing modelling techniques in order to improve on the quality of results, and to allow the addressing of some unsolved problems involving documents.
AI-driven Effective Query Formulation for Better Systematic Reviews. This project aims to develop novel AI-based search engine methods to make the creation of systematic reviews cheaper, faster and unbiased. Systematic reviews are the cornerstone for evidence-based decisions in clinical practice and government policy making. Given the pace new research is published at, it is unsustainable to manually conduct systematic reviews in the traditional manner, taking on average 2 years and $350K and becoming already outdated when published. The outcomes of this project will lead to systematic reviews of higher quality, while reducing their financial and temporal costs, providing significant benefits to organisations performing reviews and their funders, and to people impacted by decisions made from the reviews.Read moreRead less
Effective image search and retrieval through automatic image annotation. This project aims to develop an effective and efficient image retrieval system, so that images are retrieved as easily as textual data. The project researches and develops several key know-hows in image retrieval. It enables Australia to maintain significant advantage in the frontier technology of information processing.
Efficient and effective ad-hoc search using structured and unstructured geospatial information. Web search is a key enabling technology in the information age. Web search is a key enabling technology in the information age. However two technologies, ubiquitous mobile devices and massive structured data repositories such as those used to maintain social networking sites, are changing user expectations about how and what should be searched. A key challenge in the research community is how to integrate structured and unstructured information to improve the quality of search. This project proposes new approaches to ranked retrieval for location-aware search. In particular, it presents a plan to combine state-of-the-art research from two domains: spatial keyword search in databases, and ad-hoc search in Information Retrieval to improve the quality of search results.Read moreRead less

This project aims to develop new tools and techniques to improve the accuracy and speed of search and data analytics for complex information tasks. There are currently no publicly available search engines which support users engaged in complex interactive search, or that allow searchers to fully control their own data and privacy. Fundamental research advances, based on understanding real user behaviour and search needs will have an impact on important academic, industrial, and government domains, including virtual assistants, health care (clinical decision support), precision medicine, eDiscovery, crime prevention, and detailed socio-economic evaluations.Read moreRead less
Single model irregular-region retrieval for rapid plant disease detection. This project aims to study the major technical barrier in plant disease image retrieval to build a pervasive rapid plant disease identification system. This project aims to study the major technical barrier in plant disease image retrieval to build a pervasive rapid plant disease identification system. The techniques are designed to function on one or very few sample images, thus enabling on-line in field disease identification linked to authoritative plant disease image libraries. The success of this project will not only make significant contributions to fundamental theory in single model image retrieval, but also create a revolution in plant disease early detection for effective and efficient crop protection.Read moreRead less
Efficient Compression and Querying Techniques for Massive Text Collections. Web search services have become a fundamental tool used by governments, businesses, and individuals, and play a key role in our access to knowledge and information. Web search services have become a fundamental tool used by governments, businesses, and individuals, and play a key role in our access to knowledge and information. In this project we aim to develop new techniques for representing the indexes at the heart of web search services, and to devise new processing algorithms with reduced resource requirements for resolving queries and providing useful and topical answers. Higher query throughput and reduced storage load will benefit providers though reduced hardware and electricity costs, and will benefit society through better access to information, enhanced opportunities to connect and collaborate, and greater long-term scalability as on-line resources continue to multiply.Read moreRead less
Sub-collection retrieval: understanding and improving search engines. Search engines have become essential in many parts of daily life. This project aims to improve the accuracy of search engines, increasing the productivity of information seeking tasks and reducing frustration with poor search answers, thus improving the current gateway to the world of information.

Pests and diseases are major threats to the Australian food industry and environmental biosecurity. A rapid and mobile pest information retrieval system is critical to prevent a pest becoming established and devastating the region. However, automated insect image retrieval remains an unsolved challenge in the research community. This project addresses the fundamental problem of distorted and partial image query in cluttered background in order to achieve pest identification at a much earlier on-site stage. The success of this research will not only make a technical breakthrough towards retrieving objects with movable body parts, but also revolutionise the current pest detection and monitoring process.Read moreRead less

But most current services regard the data as unstructured collections of independent documents, free of context. Next-generation search applications, such as over social networks, or corporate websites, or XML data sets, must account for the inherent relationships between data items, and must allow the efficient inclusion of search context. Queries should favour semantically local data, giving results that depend on the perceived state of the querier. This project will develop indexing and search techniques for massive structured data sets. The new search methods will incorporate theoretical advances and will be experimentally validated using industry-standard open-source distributed systems.Read moreRead less
