The goal of this project is to develop chemical tools that enable molecular-level imaging of the amyloid structure. The Nobel Prize-winning super-resolution microscopy provides nanoscale imaging capabilities, but surprisingly there have been no substantive efforts to design fluorescent sensors that are compatible with this cutting-edge technology. In this project, new fluorescent super-resolution sensors will be developed that enable nanoscale visualisation of amyloid assemblies. The aim is to gain insights into the bioinorganic chemistry that occurs when immune system cells encounter pathogens and the soles of virulence factors and immune system enhancing roles of metal ions. Pathogenic bacteria and fungi accumulate chromium (Cr) in their membranes/outer capsules, which we discovered is likely to be a previously unknown, but important, virulence factor. Hyperaccummulation of nickel (Ni) is also involved in virulence, whereas vanadium (V) enhances the immune system response to these pathogens. Fundamental insights into these roles of Cr, Ni and V will be investigated using advanced spectroscopic, imaging and biochemical techniques. These insights will provide new knowledge on the innate immune system.Read moreRead less

This project aims to prepare new photocatalysts that capture and convert solar energy to stored energy by directly splitting water into oxygen and hydrogen, a perfectly clean and renewable fuel. The project will use a "bottom-up" nanoscale approach, in which compounds with different chemical and electronic properties, but with compatible crystal structures in at least one dimension, are assembled in a single synthetic step to form a well-ordered composite. By making composites of compounds the band gaps - crucial to capturing light - and surfaces -crucial to evolving hydrogen and oxygen gas- of which complement each other, the project can deliver higher performing materials at a lower cost than can be achieved by conventional top-down modification. The project will deliver new and improved photocatalysts that will hasten progress towards commercially viable systems, helping to establish a new technology and putting pressure on competing technologies such as photovoltaics and wind to drive the renewables sector forward.Read moreRead less

This project aims to investigate the correlation between structural and electronic drivers of behaviour in complex metal oxides. Transition metal oxides are critical for modern electronics and discovering new materials and determining their physical properties is essential for the introduction of new technologies. This project will synthesis and characterise thermally novel oxides containing 4d and 5d transition metals to establish the relationships between the chemistry, crystal structure and physical properties of such oxides. The unusual hierarchy of interactions in such oxides, and high sensitivity to crystal fields and subtle structural distortions, makes such oxides candidate materials for the realisation of various emergent quantum phases that may be used in the next generation of electronics. The proposal has the potential to significantly advance Australian research and development capacity in advanced materials and the associated high-tech industries.Read moreRead less

Metals are critical components of electronic devices and electrical products. Rapid disposal cycles create a major problem in managing e-waste metals and identifies an opportunity in the circular economy for recovery and re-use. Organic compounds that bind metal ions (chelators) are useful but could be improved to select a target metal from a mixture. This project aims to dissect a method used by bacteria to biosynthesize chelators and hijack this to bioengineer new classes of chelators. Outcomes include new chelators and advanced knowledge of metal selectivity, with potential environmental and economic benefits arising from recovery of valuable metals. The project will benefit chemical biology research training for real-world applications.Read moreRead less
