Summary
Microglial cells play important roles in the development and function of the brain. They also profoundly influence the development and progression of many of the most common neurological disorders including Alzheimer’s disease, stroke, neoplasms, Parkinson’s disease, traumatic brain injury, schizophrenia, and autism. The project will use stem cell technology to produce human microglia, which will allow us and others to study the role of human microglial in neurological disease.

Rates of type 2 diabetes are rising dramatically, and current efforts are failing to stem its progression. More information about why the disease develops is urgently needed. We apply an innovative approach to understand how environmental factors combine with genetic predisposition to understand the mechanism behind the disease process. Typically stop smoking services users use a base medicine for 8-12 weeks complemented by counselling, delivered via telephone in Australia. This is effective at helping people stop smoking in the short-term, but after one year most will have relapsed. Effective strategies to prevent smoking relapse are desperately needed. The use of stop smoking medicines beyond 8-12 weeks can help reduce relapse, but research (ours and others), find uptake to be modest. New products that deliver nicotine in va
