Inflammation is a major contributing factor in many diseases, including arthritis, Alzheimer's disease, multiple sclerosis, cardiovascular disease and cancer. It has recently been shown that the resolution of inflammation is an active biological process initiated by lipid mediators. The aim of this project is to synthesise and characterise pro-resolution lipid mediators, elucidate the enzyme cascades involved in their biosynthesis and explore their roles in the active resolution of inflammation. This project will provide a fundamental understanding of pro-resolution and anti-inflammatory pathways as well as new therapeutic target molecules for the treatment of inflammatory diseases.Read moreRead less

Australian sea anemones are a highly promising and largely unexplored source of peptides and proteins with potential therapeutic and diagnostic applications. This project aims to evaluate this potential by undertaking transcriptomic analyses of a number species of anemones from Australian waters and identifying peptides and proteins in their venoms by mass spectrometry. It will also demonstrate the value of transcriptomics in informing taxonomic classification of anemones. In addition this project will assess toxin diversity within and between species based on nematocyst function from specific tissue sources and provide a clearer understanding of the evolution of venoms in Australian Actiniaria.Read moreRead less
Understanding the cardioprotective effects of flavonols. Heart attack and stroke are a major cause of death and disablement in Australia. Current therapies do not treat the underlying causes of these diseases. In this project we will investigate a promising new drug treatment for these diseases and will determine how this poorly understood drug acts to reduce damage to the heart. This project will lead to new treatments for cardiovascular diseases and will enhance our understanding of the causes ....Understanding the cardioprotective effects of flavonols. Development of Insulin-like peptide 5 (INSL5) peptide analogues as novel therapeutics. Insulin-like peptide 5 (INSL5) is a naturally-occurring hormone in the body that likely plays a role in the control of appetite. This project aims to develop new molecules based on INSL5 that could be suitable for use as drugs to treat various appetite-related disorders, such as obesity (where patients eat too much) or anorexia (where patients eat too little).

This project aims to uncover the reengineering potential of the biosynthetic machinery that produces glycopeptide antibiotics by advancing our understanding of how the core peptide production line functions. Natural product biosynthesis often produces complex peptide structures, with one important example being the glycopeptide antibiotics. This project expects to generate new knowledge about enzymatic peptide biosynthesis using a highly interdisciplinary approach and previously developed tools. The anticipated outcomes of this project will be an enhanced understanding of how such complex peptide biosynthesis is performed, which is knowledge vital for future efforts to reengineer such biosynthetic peptide assembly lines as a series of modular LEGO blocks to produce new bioactive peptides.Read moreRead less

This project investigates the way in which protein molecules interact effectively with RNA molecules and also aims to enhance the CRISPR-Cas13a system for RNA detection. Innovative approaches will be used to test the role of a particular protein motif, called the RGG/RG motif, in remodelling RNA structure and enhancing the Cas13a protein. This knowledge is expected to shift our understanding of protein-RNA interactions that are fundamental to almost every aspect of cell biology. The project is intended to benefit Australia through contributing to fundamental knowledge in the field, facilitating the development of new CRISPR-Cas biotechnologies for RNA detection and through the training of young researchers in frontier technologies.
