Because of the Free Radical Theory of Aging, many millions of dollars are spent around the world on dietary antioxidants of unproven efficacy. Many millions of research dollars are spent providing support for this theory but few studies test it rigorously. The first major benefit of this research is worldwide; to refute, or to substantially enhance and focus the current support for the Free Radical Theory. This should help to rationalise and direct funding supplied to these areas. The second benefit is for Australia: aging is a fruitful area for research because of the high general public interest and for training because of its multidisciplinary nature, and funding in Australia is very low by international standards. Visualisation of latent DNA. This project aims to deliver a proof-of-concept that allows visualisation of invisible DNA (latent DNA) into a quick, inexpensive and practical DNA collection method that will lead to DNA evidence being available in more cases. It will build upon a proof-of-concept method ready for transferal to forensic casework. It will build upon a proof-of-concept method ready for transferal to forensic casework. This will allow DNA evidence recovery technicians to improve their hit rate in recovering latent DNA from real crime items, leading to more informative DNA profiles. Crime items that currently yield no genetic information will now be informative, assisting investigations of serious crimes or terrorist incidents.Read moreRead less

Robust strategies to achieve sustainable savannas under rapid global change. This project aims to design approaches for financial incentive programs that are robust to uncertainties in global climate and economic change, while delivering multiple ecosystem services. Despite billions of dollars allocated to landholders, these schemes have not been evaluated under a range of potential futures. This project expects to incorporate an unprecedented range of uncertainties into incentive program design ....Robust strategies to achieve sustainable savannas under rapid global change. This project aims to design approaches for financial incentive programs that are robust to uncertainties in global climate and economic change, while delivering multiple ecosystem services. Despite billions of dollars allocated to landholders, these schemes have not been evaluated under a range of potential futures. This project expects to incorporate an unprecedented range of uncertainties into incentive program design, and test program performance using spatial simulations of Australia’s dynamic savanna rangelands. This should lay the groundwork for applications to other environments facing similarly uncertain futures, and may prove vital to ensure we can adapt and thrive in a changing climateRead moreRead less
Harnessing next-generation technologies to tackle major food-borne parasites and design new interventions. Frontier technologies will be used in this project to unlock the molecular secrets of parasites which cause serious food-borne diseases in animals. The quantum leap made here will lead to radically new ways of treating and controlling such diseases, and provide outstanding international visibility of Australian science and a solid skills/knowledge-base.

The advanced DNA identification and forensics facility:
The project aims to establish a national integrated facility for cutting-edge forensic genetic research, resources and expertise in wildlife, forest and environmental DNA identification to improve our capacity to identify unknown biological material. The project’s goal will be to enhance synergies between academic research, service delivery and forensic application of DNA identification technologies, addressing vital questions such as: From which individual or species did this material originate? Where in the world is it from? Is it legal? The proposed facility may deliver applied outcomes for government, the criminal justice system, and industry, such as improved pest and threatened species identification; biosecurity, prosecutions of wildlife crime and illegal logging; and missing person and disaster victim identification.Read moreRead less
Genetic networks controlling lymphocyte differentiation. White blood cells are produced in the bone marrow from a rare stem cell. This research aims to understand how a handful of master-regulator genes act in the stem cells to produce the white blood cells that are required for our immune response to microbes, vaccination and to prevent cancer.
Vulnerability of Australian savannas to climate change and variability. Australian savannas are productive and are culturally and biologically significant landscapes, but they are vulnerable to climate change. This project will determine savanna function (carbon and water balance) for the present and assess how sensitive they have been to past climate variability. The project will then address how they may respond to future climate change.

The aim of this proposal is to establish a state-of-the-art Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope (ESEM) facility in the Melbourne region. ESEMs have considerable advantages over conventional instruments in that they allow imaging and analysis to be performed in gaseous or high pressure environments. This enables electron microscopy to be used for the detailed analysis of insulating, wet or out-gassing specimens in their natural state as well as the investigation, in real time, of dynamical processes such as crystallisation and corrosion. The new facility will support a wide range of multi-disciplinary research programs from four Universities and three CSIRO divisions.Read moreRead less
