The health of future generations depends largely on the health of current generations. Bad eating habits associated with obesity and other chronic diseases are often passed from parents to children. This study will provide insight into the ways in which these habits are perpetuated within families of various cultural backgrounds. It will establish how assessing family health history can be used as a tool to help identify and modify the risk of chronic, life-threatening disease in families and individuals. If proven effective, this tool can be rolled out nationwide to help promote and maintain healthier diets in Australian families and reduce the economic burden on the government.Read moreRead less

The national partnership, the Strategic Inter-governmental Nutrition Alliance, has proposed a strategy, Eat Well Australia, which aims to improve the well-being of Australians through better nutrition. Fruit and vegetable consumption is an important part of a healthy diet. Increasing Australians' fruit and vegetable consumption will substantially cut health care costs, improve quality of life, and boost Australia's fresh produce industry. Findings will directly inform an evidence base upon which to design appropriate policies and programs aimed at promoting fruit and vegetable consumption in socioeconomically disadvantaged groups. There are negative impacts of obesity, poor diet and physical inactivity on physical, psychological and social wellbeing and national economic costs associated with these burdens are substantial. Obesity and its associated illnesses are estimated to cost Australian health services $1.2 billion a year. An understanding of the modifiable determinants of nutrition and physical activity behaviours is required in order to develop effective interventions to promote health and well-being. Promoting physical activity and a healthy diet thus has the potential to substantially reduce the burden of disease in Australia and improve quality of life.Read moreRead less

The aim of this project is to trial scalable and sustainable interventions that encourage healthy purchasing and eating behaviours in supermarket settings. Most food in Australia is purchased in supermarkets and unhealthy eating is the greatest contributor to Australian life years lost. The project will assess the effect of a range of interventions on purchases of healthy and unhealthy foods and the financial impact on the retailer in eight supermarkets and a novel virtual supermarket. The economic analysis aims to ensure that successful public policy interventions are translatable to other retailers.Read moreRead less
Dietary patterns across the life-course: implications for the prevention of obesity, cardiometabolic disease and public health. This research will focus on dietary patterns in population health across the life-course. We know little about how dietary patterns and their determinants vary across life and the impact of life-stage transitions on diet and health. This research will provide insights into dietary patterns of infants, children, young adults and older adults.

This project will use data collected by the Sydney Adventist Hospital from the managerial workforce during the past 25 years to examine the relationships of food consumption, smoking and lifestyle habits to risk of heart disease, obesity and mature onset diabetes. The lifestyles of different groups of people will be compared and related to disease risk. The effectiveness of hospital based health promotion in reducing these disease risk factors will be assessed. Likely outcomes include better understanding of the causes of heart disease, obesity and diabetes; more effective hospital based health promotion strategies, and new disease surveillance systemsRead moreRead less

Improving Australians' diet will cut health care costs, improve quality of life, and promote physical, mental and social functioning. In order to improve diet, particularly among those who are disadvantaged, a better understanding of the environmental drivers of inequalities in food consumption is required. Findings will inform the development of policies to increase the availability and accessibility of foodstuffs to supply an adequate and affordable diet for all.Read moreRead less
Moving from policy to practice: a randomised trial of an implementation intervention to facilitate the adoption of a statewide healthy canteen policy. This project will test the effectiveness of an intervention in supporting schools to implement a healthy canteen policy mandated by the New South Wales Government. The trial could provide a model for supporting schools to implement school health or education policies which seek to improve the wellbeing of students.

This project aims to develop new evidence about the influence of unhealthy food marketing on children’s food attitudes, choices and consumption behaviours. Children’s exposure to unhealthy food marketing is recognised by leading international health organisations as a contributor to poor diets and overweight, and is a target for population health intervention. Outcomes from this project aim to contribute to national and international policy solutions for limiting children’s exposure to unhealthy food marketing, by providing original information on the direct and sustained impact of food marketing exposures on children’s overall food intake and dietary quality and the mechanisms that underpin this relationship.Read moreRead less
