The mathematics and physics of interacting systems. Much of the world around us involves the networked interaction between a large number of components. For example, such complex networks may be physical, biological, social or technical in nature and represent connections between magnetic spins, species, people or computers. Much of the world around us involves the networked interaction between a large number of components. For example, such complex networks may be physical, biological, social or technical in nature and represent connections between magnetic spins, species, people or computers. This Project will provide a firm theoretical foundation for such complex interacting systems through an investigation of the fascinating mathematics and physics behind them. This perspective from mathematical physics, in particular using the tools of statistical mechanics, will lead to a better understanding of many real-world complex systems.Read moreRead less
Resolving the influence of intraplate orogenesis on continental margin tectonics. Novel, multi-dating of continental sedimentary rocks will be undertaken to examine the effects of a high sediment flux from an enigmatic, major mountain-building event on a distant continental margin. This will expand our understanding of the range of tectonic influences between continental interiors and margins and onshore resource potential.
Plutonium - A new tracer of sediment transport into the Great Barrier Reef Lagoon. This work will quantify one of the most controversial threats to the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, namely the amount of sediment reaching the reef as a consequence of human activities. It will have economic implications for this major Australian tourist attraction, as well as the commercial fishing and agricultural and horticultural industries in the region. The direct economic value associated with these indust ....Plutonium - A new tracer of sediment transport into the Great Barrier Reef Lagoon. The direct economic value associated with these industries exceeds $1 billion per annum, and around 1 million people visit the inshore areas every year. Management of the park will benefit through improved understanding of the transport of sediment from the rivers to the lagoon and inner reef areas, and the fraction of the sediment attributable to anthropogenic practices. This work is timely as it will provide the tools and the data to assess the sustainability with regard to soil loss of potential agricultural development in the Top End of Australia. With food-growing areas in southern Australia under stress from a prolonged drought, the Federal Government has established a Northern Australia Land and Water Taskforce to explore the potential of the Top End for agricultural and other development. A key component of its brief is that development must be sustainable. The economic consequences of increased agriculture in the North are likely to be profound, and the findings of this research will be crucial to success.Read moreRead less

Double and triple dating are exciting new ANU-Yale breakthroughs that can be used to more accurately identify the source of sediment in rivers and sedimentary rocks than is possible using existing techniques. They have fundamental applications in the study of erosion, tracing the source of heavy minerals in titanium deposits and in determining the source of sedimentary sequences that host oil. Under favourable circumstances double dating can be used also to date sediments that are devoid of fossils, which has direct application in oil exploration.Read moreRead less
Solvable models and pattern formation: quantum spin ladders, combinatorics and stromatolite morphogenesis. The aim of this project is to develop new applications of exactly solved models in statistical mechanics. These include the study of quantum spin ladders of great interest in condensed matter physics. The physical properties of new and existing models will be derived to provide valuable benchmarks and predictions for future theoretical and experimental work. The aim of this project is to develop new applications of exactly solved models in statistical mechanics. These include the study of quantum spin ladders of great interest in condensed matter physics. The physical properties of new and existing models will be derived to provide valuable benchmarks and predictions for future theoretical and experimental work. We will also undertake the study and development of a set of remarkable conjectures relating the properties of a solvable model to an established area of combinatorics. Another aspect of this project involves the investigation of the origins, growth and form of ancient stromatolites.

The Great Barrier Reef (GBR) and how it will respond to future global climate changes is of fundamental importance to the nation. The project will address this challenge by investigating the submerged fossil coral reefs in the GBR. This will lead to a better understanding of the natural rates, range and forcing mechanisms that control global sea-level and climate variability (ie. paleo-ENSO), and geo-biological changes affecting the GBR over the last 20,000 years. This project will provide unique insights into the response of the GBR to past environmental stress and improve predictions about the vulnerability of GBR to future global climate changes.Read moreRead less
