Chanted tales from Highland New Guinea: a comparative study of oral performance traditions and their role in contemporary land politics. In parts of Highland PNG there are flourishing traditions of epic-like chanted tales. Often dealing with relationships between people and land, these are a highly valued cultural resource. The proposed collaboration will support two APAI scholars to research the social and cultural processes whereby such institutions engage local communities in resource mapping, planning and decision-making. This will be achieved through the development of a prototype search engine linking two Australian museum collections. Current digital models for managing and accessing materials in multiple formats (audio, film, photographic and print materials) will be investigated, and a set of cultural protocols developed for a subset of materials from one geographical area.
