This project aims to develop methods to assist the assessment and improvement of collocated teamwork, by making multimodal activity traces visible and available for computational analysis. This project expects to bridge the gap between promising sensing technologies and the dearth of tools to automatically assess teamwork. Expected outcomes include co-design and modelling methodologies for human-centred analytics that map from low-level data to higher-order constructs to enable non-data science savvy users to get actionable insights into multimodal team traces. This research aims to provide significant benefits to Australia, with communication and teamwork being two of the topmost critical skills required by Australian employers.Read moreRead less
Learning to be safe: Developing children's perceptions of safety and risk. Injury is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in Australia in the 0 to 29 age group. Child-centred safety education programs have the potential to establish lifelong changes in behaviour and attitudes towards safety and risk management. The study will develop a model for best practice for school safety education programs that can be transferred and adopted nationally and internationally, with the anticipated long ....Learning to be safe: Developing children's perceptions of safety and risk. Injury is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in Australia in the 0 to 29 age group. Child-centred safety education programs have the potential to establish lifelong changes in behaviour and attitudes towards safety and risk management. The study will develop a model for best practice for school safety education programs that can be transferred and adopted nationally and internationally, with the anticipated long-term outcome of a decrease in injury rates in young people. Child-centred safety education programs will have benefits for individuals not only during childhood but also throughout their working lives and across their life span.Read moreRead less
Investigating the effectiveness of teacher education for early career teachers in diverse settings: a longitudinal study. This project investigates the effectiveness of teacher education programs in Victoria and Queensland in preparing teachers for the variety of school settings in which they begin their careers. The findings will inform state and national policy, as well as the work of professional regulation authorities and teacher education providers.

Summary
The Science of Learning Research Centre. In this innovative new Centre, researchers in education, neuroscience and cognitive psychology will work together with teachers to understand the learning process. This collaboration will establish new criteria to assess the impact of different types of learning and strategies to inform teaching practices of benefit to all Australians.
Neurodevelopmental disorders and loneliness: School predictors & outcomes. This project aims to establish trajectories of loneliness across the 10-18 year developmental period in adolescents with neuro-developmental disorders (NDDs). This is significant because adolescence is the peak period for loneliness and the social communication difficulties experienced by adolescents with NDDs place them at greater risk of loneliness. Lower levels of school attendance, connectedness and mental well-being, ....Neurodevelopmental disorders and loneliness: School predictors & outcomes. Lower levels of school attendance, connectedness and mental well-being, and higher rates of disruptive behaviour, expulsion, drop-out, depression, social withdrawal, and suicide ideation are strongly linked to loneliness. Therefore predicting critical times in trajectories will enhance emotional, behavioural and school related outcomes and optimise economic, societal and quality of life benefits.Read moreRead less
Which children develop severely disruptive school behaviour? By systematically tracking 250 children through the first six years of school, this project aims to identify factors contributing to the development, perpetuation and exacerbation of disruptive school behaviour. By systematically tracking 250 children through the first six years of school, this project aims to identify factors contributing to the development, perpetuation and exacerbation of disruptive school behaviour. Disruptive student behaviour has been identified as one of the most significant issues confronting Australian schools. Yet common educational responses often inflame rather than reduce problem behaviours. The project aims to produce new knowledge about how best to address those factors in the early years while student attitudes and behaviour are still relatively malleable.Read moreRead less
University learning in the digital age: Investigating how students learn online. Learning in higher education has become more complex since much of the founding research 40 years ago, with online technologies increasingly used to engage a diverse university student population in student-centred learning. The proposed study aims to update our understanding of student learning to this contemporary university context. The project will focus specifically on how students interpret online tasks set by their teachers, how they complete those tasks by tracking their activities in real-time, and what outcomes they achieve. This study will advance fundamental understanding of these inter-related processes, and provide the stimulus to change thinking about educational design, teaching practices, and support for students.Read moreRead less
Supervision of psychotherapy: Understanding the processes that build professional competence. Psychotherapy can save lives and improve well-being. Clinical supervision is used to improve psychotherapy effectiveness and support therapists. This study contributes to the national research priorities of promoting and maintaining good health by building our knowledge of clinical supervision processes and how they influence therapist practice and client outcomes. The study will lead to an evidence-based model of effective supervision practice, which will enhance future service delivery, prevent therapist burnout, and improve client outcomes. The study will also inform development of: measures of core supervisory processes, clinical supervision practice standards, supervisor training, and professional development programs. Measuring individual and group performance in collaborative problem solving. This project aims to develop performance measures of individuals and groups completing collaborative problem-solving tasks. The project plans to draw on new research in online assessment of collaborative problem solving across curricular domains. Outcomes may include new psychometric models taking into account differences in student ability within groups and the effect on student and group performance of the curriculum ....Measuring individual and group performance in collaborative problem solving. This project aims to develop performance measures of individuals and groups completing collaborative problem-solving tasks. The project plans to draw on new research in online assessment of collaborative problem solving across curricular domains. Outcomes may include new psychometric models taking into account differences in student ability within groups and the effect on student and group performance of the curriculum domain in which the task is embedded. The benefits include a better understanding of the measurement and improvement of group work. Policy extensions beyond the classroom may lead to a workforce better equipped to solve problems collaboratively.Read moreRead less

This project will assess the potential benefits and weaknesses of 'elearning' in different subject areas and across a range of social settings (including socio-economic, gender and other critical aspects of learner diversity). It will trace the microdynamics of traditional classroom as contrasted with elearning, and develop models which most productively exploit the educational potentials of elearning. No such direct comparisons of teaching and learning has been made before. The results will inform the development of learning environments which most effectively contribute to the formation of fully enabled members of the emerging 'knowledge society'.Read moreRead less
