Discovery Projects - Grant ID: DP110100670

    Funder
    Australian Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $330,000.00
    Summary
Statistical problems involving measurement errors and sparsity. The project tackles research in complex problems where the information contained in the data is sparse and corrupted by measurement errors. With the aid of modern computing methods, the project will develop new, sophisticated techniques that have applications in areas such as genomics, national security, environmental pollution, public health and nutrition.

This project aims to address the mathematical challenges in automated early detection and classification of intrusion events in noisy time series generated from perimeter security systems. The project expects to develop robust methods to detect intrusion events under different operating environments while ignoring nuisance events. The project will boost the global competitiveness of the Australian security industry, and enable improved event detection and classification in noisy time series to the benefit of many critical application areas beyond national security.

This project aims to develop innovative approaches to identifying, measuring, and evaluating errors and purposeful intervention in the uniquely complex elections at the basis of Australian democracy. Such methods can underpin a world-class election auditing system, which contends with the risks that are emerging at the intersection of election digitisation, cybersecurity and foreign interference. The project’s expected outcomes are new auditing methods, tested on real Australian election data, with their benefits quantified against global best practice. The research outputs should help reinforce the community’s trust in Australian elections, which are a foundation for our security, social cohesion, and political resilience.

Discovery Early Career Researcher Award - Grant ID: DE120102388

    Funder
    Australian Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $375,000.00
    Summary
From Bayesian filtering to smoothing and prediction for multiple object systems. This project will develop new and improved algorithms for tracking multiple targets, such as tanks, submarines or planes, using the state of the art in mathematical and computational design. These will enable more efficient and accurate technologies for defence related applications including intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance.

    Funding Amount
    $105,000.00
    Summary
Parameter estimation for multi-object systems. Parameter estimation in multi-object system is essential to the application of multi-object filtering to a wider range of practical problems with social and commercial benefits. This project develops the necessary parameter estimation techniques for complete 'plug-and-play' multi-object filtering solutions that facilitates widespread applications.

Crowd tracking and visual analytics for rapidly deployable imaging devices. This project aims to develop visual analytics technology that adds machine intelligence to a rapidly deployable time-lapse imaging platform. Such devices can operate on solar and wind power, and be remotely programmed (via a cellular network) to take photos and send them to a server at given times. This project, which focuses on monitoring crowds of objects of interest, is expected to introduce “smart” imaging platforms that could be triggered and shoot high-quality photographs when “events of interest” occur. This project could make Australia both a world leader in video analytics and secure through on-line threat detection, and improve traffic control and agriculture.
