Summary
Spatially Integrated Social Science Research in Australia. Rapid change across society has resulted in shifts to the scope of social science research including the emergence of space and place as an important concept. Across research fields the result has been that a range of innovative and unique techniques, methodologies and theories that are space based are now being developed. The Initiative will survey the volume, range, impact, and international status of Asian area research in Australia, identify themes with high potential for achieving significant outcomes through transnational research and research-training, and develop a strategy for maximizing national research capacity in targeted areas through a national inter-disciplinary network for Asia-area research - Network Asia.
Outcomes include a published report on the state of the field and a strategic plan for a viable and sustainable research network.

The support needs of full time workers who care for these children are under acknowledged. This three-phased study will identify these support needs from the workers' perspective. In-depth interviews and population survey will provide data. Nature, culture and the challenges of environmental sustainability: bridging the science/humanities divide. Australian science currently receives considerable funding for excellent research on environmental issues. There is also significant investment in Humanities and Social Science research on Australian environmental attitudes and practices, and how these change. This proposal seeks to link the largely separate research conversations of the two traditions. We will coordinate interactions betw ....Nature, culture and the challenges of environmental sustainability: bridging the science/humanities divide. There is also significant investment in Humanities and Social Science research on Australian environmental attitudes and practices, and how these change. This proposal seeks to link the largely separate research conversations of the two traditions. We will coordinate interactions between HSS scholars, often working as individuals, and establish links that bridge the Science/Humanities divide to produce better environmental research outcomes for Australia. This project examines a sense of identity, and belonging in relation to citizenship among young people in urban and regional Australia. The project will examine what it means to be an individual, and to have a sense of belonging, and what it means to be an Australian. The project will show where understandings are common to adolescents and young adults. An additive model is proposed of the personal and social identities that are particular to urban and regional areas of Australia, that have discrete historical, gendered, social and economic foundations. Innovative methodologies integrate implicit and explicit attitudes as aspects of self knowledge. The project therefore contributes to a new contextualized understanding of Australian identity, democracy and citizenship.

Violence in the hospital setting: Testing the predictive validity of a violence assessment tool for nurses. Violence against nurses persists as an ongoing problem in the Australian health care settings. This form of violence negatively impacts on nurses' job satisfaction, performance and productivity, morale, retention and recruitment and may cause physical and/or psychological injury. Japan, Australia and the Southern Bluefin Tuna (SBT) Fishery: Social and Political Perspectives. In 1999 negotiations over the annual tonnage of the SBT fishery allocated to Japan broke down over disagreements about how much fishing effort SBT stocks could survive. Australia resorted to the international legal system and, although Australia eventually accepted Japan's position, bilateral relations have remained troubled over SBT.
