Summary
The Self and its Disorders: Humanistic, Psychiatric, and Neural Perspectives. Mental disorder fragments the self, distorts its development in adolescence, and obliterates it in old age. Because no one discipline can adequately understand the self and its pathologies, this Initiative aims to bring together researchers from the humanities and the sciences of the mind to investigate what mental disorder can reveal about the nature of the self, and what humanistic approaches to the self can contribu ....The Self and its Disorders: Humanistic, Psychiatric, and Neural Perspectives. Mental disorder fragments the self, distorts its development in adolescence, and obliterates it in old age. Because no one discipline can adequately understand the self and its pathologies, this Initiative aims to bring together researchers from the humanities and the sciences of the mind to investigate what mental disorder can reveal about the nature of the self, and what humanistic approaches to the self can contribute to its scientific study. A better understanding of diminished selfhood in mental disorder will lead to improvements in social policy and thereby to social and financial benefits for the community at large.Read moreRead less
Knowing in advance: Effective strategies for preparing young children for novel experiences. To optimise cognitive and emotional development, it is critical to identify the influences on children's lives. To optimise cognitive and emotional development, it is critical to identify the influences on children's lives. How parent-child conversations about the past shape development is well understood, but scant research has examined how adult-child preparatory discussions influence children's experience and memory of future events. Our research addresses this gap. It has important implications in medical, educational, and other contexts in which it is vital to ensure that information given in advance increases children's understanding of an experience. More generally, in specifying optimal parent-child interactions, the findings are also relevant to interventions aiming to enhance psychological and emotional resilience in the early years. Attentional and interpretive bias in anxiety: Concurrent expressions of a common selective mechanism, or independent mediators of anxiety vulnerability? The proposed research aims to determine whether two key cognitive biases recently shown to causally influence anxiety vulnerability, one involving selective attention to threat and the other involving the selective imposition of threatening interpretations on ambiguity, arise as concurrent manifestations of a common underlying causal mechanism, ....Attentional and interpretive bias in anxiety: Concurrent expressions of a common selective mechanism, or independent mediators of anxiety vulnerability? The proposed research aims to determine whether two key cognitive biases recently shown to causally influence anxiety vulnerability, one involving selective attention to threat and the other involving the selective imposition of threatening interpretations on ambiguity, arise as concurrent manifestations of a common underlying causal mechanism, or instead represent alternative causal pathways in the mediation of this emotional disposition. Resolution of this issue will significantly advance our theoretical understanding of the mechanisms that govern anxiety vulnerability, while also contributing directly to the development of new cognitive technologies designed to therapeutically modify such vulnerability.Read moreRead less
Augmentation of fear extinction in anxious children through the use of D-Cycloserine. Anxiety disorders affect around a tenth of the population, including children, and produce tremendous personal and social costs. Anxiety disorders affect around a tenth of the population, including children, and produce tremendous personal and social costs. Improving our treatments for anxious children can help to prevent a lifetime of limitations and difficulties. This study will examine whether giving children a small dose of a simple antibiotic can increase the extent to which they lose their fears of specific cues when exposed to those cues. These results have the potential to revolutionise our understanding and treatment of child anxiety.Read moreRead less
An Investigation of Intersubjectivity: Music Therapy and Hospitalised Infants. A contingent relationship is vital for normal infant development. The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, which supplies life-saving modern medical technology to very sick infants, is also an environment where contingency is rarely available to the infant . In this environment, a Music Therapist ?improvising? with the infant, can re-introduce contingency to the infant, and encourage infant self-regulation. This project investigates the efficacy of a Music Therapy intervention in improving infant health, and micro-analyses the interaction between infant and therapist in order to further understand the nature of the Communicative Musicality of the interaction.Read moreRead less

The occurrence of bizarrely false beliefs, called delusions, presents challenges, not only for clinical psychiatric practice, but also for psychology, neuroscience, and philosophy. The aim of this project is to make a distinctively philosophical contribution to our understanding of delusional beliefs by addressing three philosophical questions raised by the study of delusions, questions about perception, interpretation, and explanation. Answers to these questions will constitute substantial contributions to three central areas of philosophy, but their significance also extends beyond philosophy. They will impact on the scientific investigation of delusions and will contribute indirectly to the treatment and rehabilitation of sufferers.

The contribution of early sensory cortex to working memory. This project examines how initial sensory areas of cerebral cortex contribute to working memory. We expect to find that the memory of a stimulus involves multiple representations held for different durations by different cortical areas. We will examine how these memorial representations are related to the known neuronal representations that are supported by each sensory cortical area. These findings will advance our understanding of how ....The contribution of early sensory cortex to working memory. These findings will advance our understanding of how perceptual memories are organised and represented in the brain. They will also challenge the traditional view that segregates memory from perception by showing that certain memories are inseparable from the sensory structures mediating their content.Read moreRead less
Imaging supra- versus sub-threshold perception: Towards a neural 'signature' of conscious experience. This is the first study to combine spatial and temporal brain measures to test the prediction that 'conscious' (versus 'unconscious') emotion perception is distinguished by responses in cortical brain regions, and by later peaks in integrative brain activity. This is the first study to combine spatial and temporal brain measures to test the prediction that 'conscious' (versus 'unconscious') emotion perception is distinguished by responses in cortical brain regions, and by later peaks in integrative brain activity. Two additional innovative features include the simultaneous measurement of arousal (as an independent index of responses to emotion, regardless of conscious awareness), and the use of psychophysical methods to establish objective thresholds for 'unconscious' and 'conscious' perception. Elucidating the neural basis of conscious emotion perception is important to understanding the mechanisms of unique human experience, and disorders of stress and anxiety.Read moreRead less

This project offers substantial benefits - intellectual, practical, and ultimately economic - to the nation. On the intellectual side, the project will contribute to research output and will further enhance the national research strength in the study of delusions, rationality, and agency, within both philosophy of mind and inter-disciplinary cognitive science. On the practical side, the project offers the prospect of considerable benefits for the community as improved theories of the nature and causes of delusions generate strategies for earlier detection or even prevention of the development of delusions, new methods of therapy for patients, and better understanding for families.Read moreRead less
