Summary
800 MHz NMR spectrometer for biomolecular structure-function analysis. An understanding of how organisms function at the molecular level is central to developing the ability to fight many diseases in a rational way. This equipment will provide the capability for many different laboratories around NSW and the ACT to advance our knowledge at this fundamental level, primarily by examining the structures and functions of biomolecules such as proteins.

Pathologies of the cardiovascular system arising from heart diseases make a major contribution to morbidity and mortality in the Australian community. This project will provide new diagnostic modalities based on advanced noninvasive bioinstrumentation, signal processing and model-based analytical methods to identify early signs of developing disease or the acute exacerbation of existing disease. The impact of these new technologies on the early diagnosis and improved triaging of patients in emergency departments is potentially profound and could result in improved healthcare outcomes for the patients and reduced admissions to hospital as well as the development of a substantial international market.Read moreRead less

Unique, state-of-the-art lipidomics infrastructure. The new technologies provided through this grant will significantly enhance our understanding of lipids and their role in normal cell biology and disease. These new insights will be vital in improving our understanding of lipid-related disorders such obesity, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease and helping to improve their treatment and prevention.
Regulation of mammalian heart development by transcription factors FHL2, GATA-4 & FOG-2. FHL2 is involved in many biological processes including intracellular signaling and gene transcription. GATA and FOG proteins are critical for the development of diverse tissues, including the heart. FHL2 is involved in many biological processes including intracellular signaling and gene transcription. GATA and FOG proteins are critical for the development of diverse tissues, including the heart. Knowledge gained in this project will advance our understanding of many cellular processes, including heart development, and will contribute to our knowledge in Biology, Zoology and Veterinary Science. More specifically, it will contribute to Stem Cell research, a 'hot' area in the biotechnology industry, particularly towards building a strong base of expertise, skills and technological capability in this new field, and may even lead to the development of a commercial product e.g. a heart muscle cell-coated biomaterial to aid failing heart.Read moreRead less
Hybrid Sensor-based Physiological Control of an Implantable Rotary Blood Pump. With over 11 million people needing heart transplants worldwide and only 3000 donor hearts, an effective alternative therapy is needed. The Ventracor Ltd. rotary blood pump is one possible approach whereby a fully implantable mechanical device assists the failing heart. The innovative steps in this research proposal will be a means to robustly and safely control the speed of the pump to meet the metabolic needs of the body. Apart from the obvious health benefits for patients, this will provide the company with a huge market advantage that will also help to bolster the Australian medical device industry.Read moreRead less
YrdC translational control: physical and functional interactions, identification and influence of amino acid phosphorylation. This project will expand our basic understanding of the mechanisms with which a newly identified and highly conserved protein, YrdC203 regulates the process of protein synthesis from mRNA. This work will lead to basic insights into how gene expression is regulated at the level of translation, and generate valuable research tools, such as YrdC203 knockdown tools, peptide m ....YrdC translational control: physical and functional interactions, identification and influence of amino acid phosphorylation. This project will expand our basic understanding of the mechanisms with which a newly identified and highly conserved protein, YrdC203 regulates the process of protein synthesis from mRNA. This work will lead to basic insights into how gene expression is regulated at the level of translation, and generate valuable research tools, such as YrdC203 knockdown tools, peptide mimetics and decoys, phospho-specific and phospho-non specific antibodies. Exploitation of this breakthrough science will open up new avenues for therapeutic intervention in the future, while commercial exploitation of such reagents that recognise or interfere with YrdC203 will generate economic returns to Australia.Read moreRead less
Molecular mechanisms of stem cell self-renewal. Muscle growth and regeneration is critically dependent on its stem cell compartment. We have discovered that the p38 MAPK pathway is essential for stem cell self-renewal in the C2C12 myogenic cell line. This proposal seeks to understand the molecular basis of stem cell self-renewal in skeletal muscles, data that may be applicable to many stem cell systems, and to the enormous promise of stem cell therapies for injury and diseases of the aged. We will attempt to alter the balance of stem cell production by enforced p38 expression, and take microarray and proteomics approaches to define stem cell pathways.Read moreRead less
Computational haemodynamics system for prediction of risk of rupture of cerebral aneurysms. Every year about 2000 Australians suffer a ruptured aneurysm in the brain and some 750 of these die within 4 weeks. Since there is an increase in the detection of unruptured aneurysms, especially in healthy young people, there is an urgent need to be able to decide which lead to rupture and to provide suitable treatment options. This project, which will provide markedly improved means of patient-specific risk determination for aneurysm rupture, will have significant impact in reducing associated costs on the national health burden due to cerebral hemorrhage and stroke, on community productivity and disability and on more efficient targeting of expensive and dangerous brain surgery.Read moreRead less
