    Integrated Nanoscale Biosystems Network (INBN). The INBN will integrate high-priority research, already identified by the ARC, in materials nanoscience and engineering with nanoscale biology. The INBN will provide the means to consolidate world-class multidisciplinary Australian research groups in existing Centres of Excellence, including several Federation Fellows, into a nanobiotechnology focus. The INBN will provide the means to consolidate world-class multidisciplinary Australian research groups in existing Centres of Excellence, including several Federation Fellows, into a nanobiotechnology focus. The significant outcomes of INBN are the critical mass of outstanding researchers in the nanobiosciences, facilitation of innovative research to produce novel intellectual property and provision of pathways into collaborative research with international scientists and industry, and the training and development of the next generation scientists for this emerging discipline.

    Genomic and molecular characterisation of a novel Australian leishmania pathogen. Leishmaniasis is the second most serious protozoal disease after malaria. This project will help characterise the first Leishmania species identified in Australia providing molecular tools to monitor the pathogen and a detailed assessment of any potential risk to human health. Comparative analysis with more pathogenic species will help identify genes and mechanisms that determine the progression of human disease le .... This project is likely to result in new and improved technologies to aid in the management and diagnosis of a range of diseases including iron metabolism disorders such as thalassaemia and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease. Other aspects of the research may lead to technologies for the early detection of some cancers. The technologies will enhance Australia's intern .... The dog's role in transmitting zoonotic gastrointestinal parasites to humans has been recognised as a significant public health problem worldwide. Surveillance data with regard to canine parasites in Thailand and its regional countries is largely lacking, especially with regard to the dog's role as a perpetuator of the liver and intestinal flukes. Surveillance data with regard to canine parasites in Thailand and its regional countries is largely lacking, especially with regard to the dog's role as a perpetuator of the liver and intestinal flukes. This project aims to provide an accurate and comprehensive assessment of the risks these parasites pose to the public using a combination of conventional and novel molecular epidemiological tools. Successful completion of this project will provide a model for control programs to be generated in the SE Asian region.
