Despite almost a century of struggle, gravitation (as described by Einstein's general theory of relativity) remains divided from the principles of quantum theory (the framework in which our best theories of particle physics are couched). Bringing them together constitutes one of the most urgent problems of physics. By exploring the foundations of the problem, and the various proposed resolutions, from both historical and philosophical perspectives, this project aims both to shed new light on why it so stubbornly resists a solution and to assist in its solution. It will map out the specific features of the various approaches to quantum gravity with a view to offering researchers a helpful tool to navigate and compare their virtues and vices.Read moreRead less

This project aims to propose and assist in the development of novel approaches, based on atomic, molecular and optical technologies, to detect dark matter in the laboratory, and thereby establish the identity and microscopic properties of dark matter. The origin and nature of dark matter remains one of the most important outstanding problems in contemporary science. The intended outcome of this project is that the use of our novel methods will enable us to search for forms of dark matter that have remained largely unprobed to date. This in turn is expected to open up new opportunities in the global hunt for dark matter that should improve our chances of finally discovering the nature and properties of dark matter.Read moreRead less

This project aims to develop a prototype electric field induced second harmonic generation metrology setup for studying thin film dielectric interfaces on silicon in partnership with Femtometrix. The quality of these silicon-dielectric interfaces, which are affected by trapped charges and defects, are critical for microelectronic and optoelectronic device manufacturing. Through several proposed methodologies to separate the effect of interface and bulk signals, it is expected that the sensitivity of the prototype setup will exceed the previous record of 1 kV/cm. This metrology technique will be further expanded for applicability to silicon photovoltaics, specifically passivating contacts which cannot be studied via conventional techniques.Read moreRead less

This project seeks to advance our basic understanding of the energy transfer processes which are crucial to the operation of organic optoelectronic devices. Controlling energy transfer is central to the operation of electronic devices. As devices become smaller and more complex, the transfer of energy across interfaces between different materials begins to dominate their operation and characteristics. This project plans to use a range of complementary experimental approaches to study energy generation, transfer and diffusion across the nanoscale interface between organic and inorganic materials. Knowledge gained would provide a roadmap for bottom-up improvements to the efficiency of energy transfer across hybrid organic–inorganic interfaces, with a range of applications in optoelectronic devices, including photovoltaics.Read moreRead less

This project will make terahertz waveguide-based devices by exploiting metamaterials, man-made composite materials capable of controlling light in new ways. This project will build hollow-core metamaterial waveguides, where the large dimension (a few millimetres) of current rigid waveguides will be reduced to a few tens of microns. This project will demonstrate tuneable spectral filtering using these novel waveguides, leading to realisation of the world's first hollow-core waveguide-based metamaterial device. The outcome will have a profound impact on the next generation of terahertz devices, high resolution imaging and high sensitivity biosensors, which are indispensable tools for many disciplines including biology, medicine, forensic and public safety.Read moreRead less

To answer it, world-class facilities and a unique combination of observations and theory are required. This DP team, a world-class team of observers and theorists, will tackle this question by leveraging on two multi-million dollar projects: the MAGPI galaxy survey and the hydrodynamical simulations suite EAGLE-XL. MAGPI will deliver exquisite kinematics for hundreds of galaxies in the middle ages of the Universe, providing a view to the effect of dark matter on galaxies at this critical time, while EAGLE-XL represents the technological frontier in simulations and provides the best interpretative framework for MAGPI.Read moreRead less
Rarefied hypervelocity separated flow in the transitional to continuum regimes. The transition regime for low-density flows is a no-man's-land between free-molecular and continuum flow, where the flow behaves differently to the assumptions typically used for modelling either flow type. The transition regime for low-density flows is a no-man's-land between free-molecular and continuum flow, where the flow behaves differently to the assumptions typically used for modelling either flow type. Bird's direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method is typically thought to be the best way of modelling these flows, but has not produced excellent agreement with previous experiments on low-density separated flows, due to computational limitations and lack of knowledge of the flow's internal energy. This proposal is a blind test of the best current DSMC codes against our experiments and a hypersonic continuum code, with the full internal energy state of the flow experimentally quantified for the first time.Read moreRead less

The high-speed and low-power requirements of state-of-the-art transistors are met by material control that has reached an unprecedented level. The material in a nano-device has drastically different characteristics than in the bulk. To achieve this, the industry needs to implement strain, ultra sharp junctions, and well controlled potential profiles all on the nanometre scale. This project aims to develop a technique to directly measure these properties in an actual device. Electrical and optical atom tomography will make it possible to map device parameters on the atomic scale. This atomistic anatomy has the potential to revolutionise the development of nanoscale devices and grow into a tool for a multi-billion dollar industry.Read moreRead less
