This project intends to examine how health knowledge taken home by primary-aged children affects children’s wellbeing, family food practices and family relationships. Widespread public concern with obesity means children can be seen as advocates for change in family health practices. The project plans to investigate the consequences for children and families of primary school healthy eating programs, with particular attention to diverse family groups. It plans to use a multimethod qualitative approach including video diaries and interviews with children and parents within families. Results are expected to inform school health and education policy practices and provide resources for those working on health issues with primary-school-aged children and families, to facilitate child and family wellbeing.Read moreRead less

This project aims to explore the role that food prepared outside the home versus within the home plays in the diets of young adults. The project plans to use data mining to understand where, when and with whom young adults buy food, and the nutritional composition and overall contribution to diet of these foods. The project will use a newly designed and tested Smartphone application to transform data collection and processing, and enable continuous digital photography. The knowledge gained is intended to form the evidence base for formulation of policy and electronic and mobile-health promotion to reverse the problem of young adults gaining more weight than any other group in Australia.Read moreRead less

It will do this by informing policy development and identifying principles for good practice in institutional settings. It will also generate knowledge regarding the processes involved in changing attitudes and behaviours to achieve culture change within organisations and the wider community.Read moreRead less
Excessive sitting and population health: strengthening the science and the relevance to policy and practice. The majority of Australian adults spend most of their waking hours sitting; this increases the likelihood of developing diseases of inactivity, including diabetes, heart disease and some cancers. New research will investigate what factors encourage excessive sitting and what the health benefits are for people who deliberately do less sitting.

Understanding and increasing high school girls' physical activity levels through a physical education-based research program. Currently, less than 15% of early-teenage Australian girls meet exercise recommendations. This project will identify new ways in which physical education can promote physical activity, and will provide practical methods for increasing girls' activity levels, helping to reduce future health risks such as obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.
