Dissociation of a Tetrameric Enzyme with Interface-Targeted Peptides. With antibiotic resistance on the rise, there is an urgent need to develop new antibiotics and an equally urgent need to characterise new antibiotic targets. One such target is dihydrodipicolinate synthase (DHDPS) which catalyses the critical step in lysine and cell wall biosynthesis in bacteria. This proposal aims to generate new drugs targeting DHDPS for effective and rapid treatment of bacterial infections, including gastroenteritis. Recent statistics show that over 5 million Australians suffer from gastroenteritis each year and hospitalisation for this infection is nearly seven times higher for indigenous than non-indigenous children. Accordingly, this research has the potential to assure a healthier future for millions of Australians.Read moreRead less

The dynamics of viral latency in chronic infection. Although many acute infections can now be controlled, we still suffer from a large number of chronic infections such as HIV or herpes that cannot be eradicated. Many of these infections persist because they can lie dormant in a 'latent' state. How this latent state is established, and how long it lasts are important to understand if we want to control these infections. We have assembled a team of mathematicians, immunologists and virologists in order to study latent infection at the cellular level, and within infected monkeys. This will provide the first insights into the dynamics of latency - how these cells are produced and die - and should lead to novel approaches to controlling chronic infection.Read moreRead less

This project aims to provide proof-of-concept for the rapid production of plant-made vaccines of high strategic value to the poultry industry. Plant-made AI vaccines would help safeguard primary industries in Australia from exotic influenza strains and shield rural communities from the impact of stock losses. This collaboration will also contribute to the Molecular Farming industry by ensuring that Australian interests are considered as this frontier technology tackles the challenges of turning academic research into marketable products. The key features of an oral plant-made AI vaccine, including rapid and non-egg based production, also make this an attractive technology for the future development of swine and human influenza vaccines.Read moreRead less

The innovation cycle is a complex and misunderstood area of management, particularly in the Biotechnology Industry where the innovation cycle can take up to 15 years. The management literature provides anecdotal information, however, lacks theoretical models which provide guidance to Managers on how to shorten the innovation process. Therefore, the aim of this PhD research, which is "a world first", is to develop and test an innovation cycle model through quantitative and qualitative research. Expected outcomes include developing a valid and reliable model for measuring and predicting relationships between innovation practice and innovation performance and developing case studies for teaching purposes.Read moreRead less
