Molecular and immunological approaches to managing Australia's seafood allergy epidemic. Seafood is an increasingly important cause of food allergy. Novel insight into the functions of why and how proteins from seafood develop to potent allergens will lead to the development of better diagnostics and therapeutics. This will assist patients to better manage their serious food allergy.
Better prevention and management of disabling back pain. This project will establish a program of back pain research within an inter-disciplinary research centre focused on the prevention and management of physical disability.
Endocrine signalling from bone cells in the regulation of glucose and energy homeostasis. Osteoporosis, obesity and diabetes are increasingly common, all of which are in urgent need of more effective therapies. This project examines powerful neuropeptide signalling pathways that integrate bone homeostasis with whole body energy and glucose balance. Initial studies have defined the efferent hypothalamic pathways of this system and this project will build upon these findings to examine the feedbac ....Endocrine signalling from bone cells in the regulation of glucose and energy homeostasis. Osteoporosis, obesity and diabetes are increasingly common, all of which are in urgent need of more effective therapies. This project examines powerful neuropeptide signalling pathways that integrate bone homeostasis with whole body energy and glucose balance. Initial studies have defined the efferent hypothalamic pathways of this system and this project will build upon these findings to examine the feedback signals produced by bone cells to regulate adipose and pancreatic function. Exploring this entirely new paradigm of skeletal biology, will reveal novel circulating factors capable of regulating adipose and glucose economies, as well as bone mass, thereby offering potential therapies for these debilitating conditions.Read moreRead less
Characterisation of a powerful molecular motor, the FtsK DNA translocase. The FtsK protein is a fast and powerful molecular motor, a pump that can, and does, move an entire bacterial chromosome. This project will uncover the detail of the mechanism used by this motor to convert the cell's chemical energy source Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) into movement of DNA; revealing the molecular detail of a fast and powerful motor.
Inverse Problems For Partial Differential Equations - A Geometric Analysis Perspective. This project will study mathematical models of various medical imaging techniques. These problems are formulated as inverse problems in partial differential equations (PDE) where one wishes to obtain information about a differential equation from data about its solutions. This problem is not well understood in the geometric setting where the PDE is taking place on a manifold and the goal of this research is t ....Inverse Problems For Partial Differential Equations - A Geometric Analysis Perspective. This project will study mathematical models of various medical imaging techniques. These problems are formulated as inverse problems in partial differential equations (PDE) where one wishes to obtain information about a differential equation from data about its solutions. This problem is not well understood in the geometric setting where the PDE is taking place on a manifold and the goal of this research is to advance the field in this direction. This project will introduce novel and innovative ideas from geometry and topology to overcome some of these difficulties. This project will enrich mathematics by providing links between different fields. Furthermore, it will enable the application of imaging techniques in a broader geometric setting to provide more efficient and accurate non-invasive detection techniques.Read moreRead less
