Australia's health sector is increasingly and controversially regulated, but with little analysis of the different approaches of the proliferating regulatory bodies. This research collaboration between the ANU and health industry partners will contribute to better health outcomes by drawing lessons from international health regulation and from other sectors, by ?mapping? this rapidly expanding terrain, and, through selected case studies, evaluating regulatory strategies intended to improve the safety and quality of healthcare for patients. The study will examine the mix of ?hard? and 'soft? regulation and propose productive pathways towards future ?responsive regulation? for Australia and internationally. Read moreRead less

The Bioreg Network aims to coordinate the generation of innovative regulatory strategies and legally and ethically sound standards based on high-level scientific research results across disciplinary, organisational, institutional and jurisdictional boundaries in the area of biotechnology regulation. It will encourage open exchange of information and sharing of resources, development and implementation of coherent and integrated research plans among researchers working on topics of common interest. The bringing together of academic, government, private research and regulatory organisations into one Network will generate long-term interactions resulting in a wide range of research programs addressing aspects of all four National Research Priority Areas.Read moreRead less
The Influence of Context on Player Attitudes to Drugs: Implications for Sport Policy in Australia. This research project will generate evidence about drug use in sport that can be used to both evaluate current policy and better inform the drugs-in-sport debate. In addition it will provide significant benefits to both the collaborating partners and the sport industry in general. Collaborating partners will benefit by being able to contribute to the research project, and having full access to the ....The Influence of Context on Player Attitudes to Drugs: Implications for Sport Policy in Australia. This research project will generate evidence about drug use in sport that can be used to both evaluate current policy and better inform the drugs-in-sport debate. In addition it will provide significant benefits to both the collaborating partners and the sport industry in general. Collaborating partners will benefit by being able to contribute to the research project, and having full access to the results of the research. It is anticipated that the results will directly assist their strategic goals of education, advocacy and harm minimisation. The sport industry will benefit by obtaining a more detailed understanding of how players view drugs-in-sport and in particular how they discriminate between various drug types. Read moreRead less
Maximising the Effectiveness of Public Health Policies: The Case of Smoke-Free Policies. Promoting good health and well being for all Australians is a key National Research Priority. Promoting good health and well being for all Australians is a key National Research Priority. Tobacco smoking is the largest single preventable cause of death in Australia, and while much has been achieved in tobacco control in Australia, there has been little systematic effort to understand or improve the relationship between research and policy implementation. This project will provide a deeper and more sophisticated understanding of both how to maximise the effectiveness of smoke-free policies, and, through that increased understanding, how to best manage the implementation of public policies that seek to facilitate changes in the behaviour of individual citizens. The relationships between retail availability, peer smoking and tobacco purchase and consumption: a diary study of smoking behaviour. Despite multiple public health initiatives, smoking remains the leading preventable cause of death, costing the Australian community more than 19,000 lives each year. Public awareness of the dangers of smoking is high, yet around 19% of Australians continue to smoke. Despite multiple public health initiatives, smoking remains the leading preventable cause of death, costing the Australian community more than 19,000 lives each year. Public awareness of the dangers of smoking is high, yet around 19% of Australians continue to smoke. Social effects (e.g. the presence of nearby smokers) and the high retail availability of cigarettes are likely to be associated with smoking rates and failed quit attempts, yet there is little research in this area. By providing a better understanding of the effect of these factors on smoking patterns, the study will suggest the most effective avenues for reducing the rate of smoking in Australia, and thus decreasing its substantial cost to individuals and the community.Read moreRead less
A taxonomy of Australian consumers' food and health knowledge. Identification and measurement of the basic dimensions of food knowledge of consumers will inform new education curricula and community communication programs. The findings will enable better targeting of community and industry education by policy planners, education authorities, and the food industry. They will also enable monitoring and evaluation of food communication programs. In the longer term, this research may also enable citizens to deal with the changes caused by climate change, metabolic disease and increasing longevity; help educate more literate food industry workers; enhance communications between citizens, industry and government; and generate greater demand for higher quality food products.

HIV/AIDS is one of the greatest contemporary threats to global human security, and its rapid growth in parts of the Asia/Pacific region makes it a major concern for Australia. Appropriate responses to the threat require accurate and regularly updated policy information. The construction of an interactive HIV policy data bank will support considerable research in a number of disciplines directly relevant to HIV control. This project draws on multiple sources to construct a research and policy tool which will be drawn on by the partner organizations in a variety of HIV-related research projects.
