Genetic variation of the vulnerable Eucalyptus argophloia, and its development for sustainable hardwood forestry in low rainfall areas. We will examine the biodiversity in a vulnerable species of eucalypt, Eucalyptus argophloia. This species is under threat due to land clearing, and only 1000 trees remain in the wild. E. argophloia has great promise for plantation timber in low rainfall areas of Northern Australia. E. argophloia has great promise for plantation timber in low rainfall areas of Northern Australia. We will breed superior varieties for plantation forestry designed to cope with climate change, low rainfall and salinity. This project will help to manage and preserve the species in the wild and create profitable and sustainable timber plantations on marginal lands.Read moreRead less
Identifying cost-effective reforestation approaches for biodiversity conservation and carbon sequestration in the Australian wet tropics. There is great potential for rainforest reforestation to help in the protection of Australia's tropical flora and fauna. Little is known, however, about how to reforest pasture to rainforest for the purpose of maximising the recovery of native biodiversity. We propose a unique experimental study of rainforest reforestation practices with biodiversity conservation as a primary goal. Reforestation is currently an unlikely option for most landholders in Australia's tropics given the lack of data on the economic benefits obtainable from such efforts. Our study examines the profits obtainable through the carbon market for each reforestation approach with the goal of increasing the feasibility of rainforest reforestation in North Queensland.Read moreRead less
Development of cryopreservation for high value provenance collections of recalcitrant plant species used in post-mining restoration. This project will develop new and innovative ways to store highly valued native plant germplasm at ultra cold temperatures (-196 °C, in liquid nitrogen) as a means to ensure that elite genotypes used in minesite restoration and critically endangered species are not lost forever to extinction. This project will be the first of its type in Australia utilising a multi ....Development of cryopreservation for high value provenance collections of recalcitrant plant species used in post-mining restoration. This project will develop new and innovative ways to store highly valued native plant germplasm at ultra cold temperatures (-196 °C, in liquid nitrogen) as a means to ensure that elite genotypes used in minesite restoration and critically endangered species are not lost forever to extinction. This project will be the first of its type in Australia utilising a multidisciplinary approach to answer key storage questions and will provide significant national benefits to conservation programs and landcare groups, providing these with additional resources to ensure the long-term survival of native plant germplasm collections. Ecosystem restoration of bauxite-processing residue sand disposal areas in Western Australia: Important biogeochemical processes and effective fertilisation strategies. Alumina production is one of Australia's most important mining activities. Alumina production is one of Australia's most important mining activities. Residue from bauxite-processing must be managed appropriately to minimise detrimental impacts on the surrounding environment. The location of Alcoa's WA Refineries in environmentally- and community- sensitive areas necessitates a detailed understanding of residue disposal area (RDA) management. Currently little is known about the biogeochemical cycling of nitrogen, phosphorus and carbon in the residue sand despite its importance for sustainable rehabilitation practice. Findings from this project are critical for developing improved fertilisation strategies and protocols for ecosystem restoration of RDAs, which will be applicable both in Australia and overseas. Environmental determinants of mass extinctions by emerging disease: why does chytridiomycosis exterminate frogs in rainforest but not in open forest? The emerging fungal disease known as chytridiomycosis is causing decline and extinctions of many species of frogs around the world; Australia is no exception. Although a threat abatement plan is currently in place, a successful management strategy to deal with this problem in the wild does not exist. The emerging fungal disease known as chytridiomycosis is causing decline and extinctions of many species of frogs around the world; Australia is no exception. Although a threat abatement plan is currently in place, a successful management strategy to deal with this problem in the wild does not exist. In the wet tropics region of north Queensland, healthy populations of torrent frogs exist in the drier areas adjacent to the rainforest where they disappeared. Understanding how they coexist with this pathogen, as well as their dispersal capacity to recolonise the rainforest is basic information necessary to aid theses species in future conservation efforts.Read moreRead less
