The Network aims to ensure the long-term ability of Australians to excel in scientific and technological innovation at all levels of community activity. This will be achieved by establishing significant and ambitious research agendas for improving the teaching and learning of Mathematics, Science and Technology in primary, secondary and tertiary education sectors. Of significance will be the productive synergies flowing from uniting, across the three disciplines, Australia's most outstanding, experienced and dedicated researchers with new and mid-career colleagues. Expected outcomes include a diverse but cohesive and collaborative research community that provides international leadership in helping students achieve their full potential. Read moreRead less

Sustaining Australia's growth and prosperity is dependent on continuous innovation in the teaching of science. Yet science is one of the least taught subjects in the primary curriculum because teachers lack content knowledge and confidence. This research engages preservice primary teachers in using new technologies to develop their understanding of science content knowledge through digital animation and to collaborate with other preservice teachers interstate and internationally. The products and processes of digital animation will help maintain and expand Australia's base as a knowledge economy as well as provide a social benefit of improved science teaching in schools. This project will contribute to Australian social cohesion through the non-divisive Indigenous Knowledge approach to the teaching of Indigenous issues. Indigenous Knowledge Research is a new methodological development that will afford research in many cross-cultural contexts including those where literacy and numeracy skills are low. This research methodology has national and community significance because it fosters social cohesion in investigating problematic contexts through methods that bridge across groups and build community capacities to engage, identify and implement self-owned solutions. This research will facilitate the instigation of informational gathering structures in the most marginalized sectors of the Australian community.Read moreRead less
Girls and Information Communication Technology (ICT) Career Pathways: Tackling the Upper Middle School 'Turn Off'. This project aims to develop strategic responses to factors associated with girls forming such negative perceptions of Information Communication Technology during their upper middle school years that they overwhelmingly reject Information Communication Technology as an option for advanced study and future careers. This project will contribute towards Australia's National Research Priority 3 of building and transforming frontier technologies to maximize creative, technological capability by collaboratively developing a strategic model for responding to factors identified as 'turning girls off Information Communication Technology'.Read moreRead less
School-University e-Learning research partnerships for scaling up innovation. Despite optimism about new technologies for learning, e-learning innovation has been slow to scale up. Despite optimism about new technologies for learning, e-learning innovation has been slow to scale up. This project tests a novel research strategy for engaging schools sustainably with e-learning. Teams of students (school and university), teachers (including beginning teachers), community members, consultants and e-learning researchers are constituted, in schools, to identify, collaboratively, hard-to-learn (technology-and-science) concepts and effective teaching approaches, develop ways of exploiting new media to teach such concepts and scale up their solutions within and beyond their schools. Re-conceiving the problem so students and teachers gain equity as e-learning researchers yields a model for scholarly, future-oriented educational renewal.Read moreRead less
Crisis in chemistry: How do we best teach particle concepts for understanding? Fundamental chemistry knowledge is essential in the information age because citizens and professionals need to make informed decisions about GM technology, pollution and how to teach science. Fundamental chemistry knowledge is essential in the information age because citizens and professionals need to make informed decisions about GM technology, pollution and how to teach science. Chemistry learning is compromised by recurring intuitive and taught misconceptions about atoms and molecules. The widely documented misconceptions emphasise what students cannot do. This unique project studies students, teachers and international chemistry educators to develop a theoretical and practical model of what students can understand and do in primary, secondary and university chemistry with respect to atoms and molecules. The research will significantly improve chemistry teaching at the macroscopic, microscopic and symbolic levels.Read moreRead less

How to use information and communication technologies (ICT) to improve teaching and learning outcomes has become a critical question for educators world-wide. Governments are investing hugely in hardware, software and infrastructure to support the use of technologies but the research conducted into their effective use in inadequate. This proposal will investigate a relatively new methodology, design experiments, that has potential to provide the basis for enhancing both pedagogy and outcomes through technology integration. The research will determine the major principles, methods and critical characteristics of design experiments, and develop guidelines for their use in ICT research.Read moreRead less

This project proposes collaborative research to address low rates of female participation in Information Communication Technology professional occupations and education pathways - involving academic researchers and personnel from Education Queensland and Queensland based ICT companies . A comprehensive Queensland data set will be generated by surveying and interviewing female Year 11-12 students and ICT professionals, and analysed with industry partner involvement. Results will provide the basis for developing new and coordinated strategic approaches among education systems, ICT industry, and universities to improving school programs and enhancing female participation rates. This is necessary for addressing projected skill shortfalls and maximising talent pools available to industry.

The nation in general will benefit by having a better prepared and more competent population of Chinese teachers, learners and professionals, whose exposure to Chinese language and culture will encompass the multiplicity of identities in a contemporary, multicultural society. This research will establish Australia as a major innovator in Chinese language pedagogy and will equip Australians to better understand our region and our world. A unique feature of the project is the provision for assessment of cultural awareness derived from study of language, ensuring that students who do not persevere with Chinese language will have a 'surrender value' declaration, recording competency in knowledge of Chinese culture.Read moreRead less
