Collections of new micro-organisms and their metabolites suitable for use in the chemical synthesis programs will emerge from the proposed research. This will provide a potentially highly-valuable national resource that could serve the needs of many laboratories around Australia by allowing them to establish more direct routes to target molecules being sought in the development of new therapeutic agents and/or materials. The combined application of molecular biological, microbiological and chemical synthesis techniques in a concerted manner in the one location will lead to a raft of new opportunities for the biotech and pharmaceutical industries in Australia.Read moreRead less

Free radical chemistry is of increasing importance in the manufacture of improved plastics, paints and related materials, in helping restrict oxidative processes that can lead to adverse human health and also to the degradation of important industrial materials. The research will contribute to promoting & maintaining good health by developing new methods for reducing the impacts of ageing as well as in the treatment of several life-threatening conditions such as stroke. Industrial applications include better surface coatings for preserving metals, and additives to improve the quality and shelf life of beer and wines.Read moreRead less

Many pathogenic bacteria have developed resistance to antibiotics in common use, and new drugs are urgently required to kill them. Copying of their chromosomes before they divide into two new cells is essential for bacteria to live, so DNA synthesis is a good process to target for development of new antibiotics. This project will use state-of-the-art equipment available in several laboratories in Australia and overseas to develop new understanding of how the molecular machine that copies DNA works. This k nowledge could lead to new drugs, and will give us new information about how cellular machines function.Read moreRead less
The biosynthesis of structural proteins in parasites. The socio-economic impact of parasitic diseases, in Australia and throughout the world, is enormous- they kill 2-3 million people per year and cost livestock industries billions of dollars per annum. The socio-economic impact of parasitic diseases, in Australia and throughout the world, is enormous- they kill 2-3 million people per year and cost livestock industries billions of dollars per annum. Some are serious food and waterborne threats, such as the coccidia, because they are transmitted from person-to-person via the faecal-oral route, or via ingestion of contaminated water or food, or through the ingestion of cysts in raw or undercooked meat. They cause diarrhoea, which in some cases, can be life-threatening. We will understand how the coccidia protect themselves as they move from host to host and, through that understanding, develop new ways to control them and eliminate the suffering caused by parasitic diseases.Read moreRead less

To remain internationally competitive in the future many Australian manufacturing enterprises will need to exploit nano-space. These manufacturers of advanced products containing nano-structured materials will be reliant on sophisticated characterisation techniques in order to maintain a competitive edge. This project will place Australia at the forefront of the application of one such technique, Positron Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy (PALS), to ordered nano-structured amphiphile self-assembly materials. Australian post-graduate students and post-doctoral fellows will also be trained in the creation and characterisation of molecular self-assembly materials which underpin the bottom-up approach in nanotechnology.Read moreRead less

The purpose of this research is to develop a humane, simple, safe, effective means of sterilizing female domestic animals without the need for surgical intervention. This novel experimental strategy is to target the supply of dormant eggs in the ovaries of female mammals. Every female mammal is born with a finite supply of eggs in the ovarian cortex. These cells cannot divide and so when this store is exhausted, reproduction ceases. Our strategy is to develop pharmaceutical reagents that will destroy this dormant egg population, thereby rendering the animals instantaneously and irreversibly infertile.Read moreRead less
