Recently, advances in femtosecond lasers enabled access to T-ray frequencies, producing an important new imaging modality for non-invasive sensing of materials and structures. Internationally, T-rays represent a rich new science leading to advanced forms of biophotonics, biomedical imaging and spectroscopy. Non-invasive T-ray diagnostics of nano- and bio-materials are being hotly pursued. The outcome will be a strategically important Australian T-ray facility that will provide immediate and transparent nationwide access. Historically, industry is transformed every time a new part of the electromagnetic spectrum becomes accessible - T-rays are the next frontier.Read moreRead less

This project aims to establish a cutting edge adaptive electrical capacitance volume tomography facility for real-time metering / imaging of multi-phase flows. Optimisation of these flows which are encountered in many industries, is paramount in today's carbon-constrained global economy. This project expects to generate the new knowledge necessary for such optimisations. Expected outcomes include enhanced national capability for characterisation of multi-phase flows in real-time under both ambient and high temperatures. This should benefit and greatly facilitate the commercial rollout of novel technologies in industrial sectors as diverse as mineral processing, clean energy, fuels/chemicals, oil/gas, food and environmental remediation. Current approval methods for determining fire properties of construction materials are often incorrect in yielding properties that can be used in situations removed from test conditions. The main aim of this project is to obtain fundamental fire properties by examining the ignition and extinction processes of diffusion flames near solid surfaces. The project undertakes detailed study of flame spread in the direction opposite to the flow of air, which defines the initial fire growth and is important in fire propagation. Results from this project will provide scientific underpinning for the development of approval standards for new materials, which are needed to support Australia's transition from prescriptive to performance based building codes.Read moreRead less

Australia, like many countries, has adopted sediment quality guidelines, which govern construction, waste disposal, dredging, protection of living resources and remediation in coastal regions. Recent studies by the current applicants indicate that these guidelines overestimate sediment toxicity, which may result in unnecessary, costly environmental investigations and possibly needless, very expensive remediation. Although contaminants are in extremely high concentrations in many Australian coastal areas, they may not be available (bioavailable) to benthic animals. A new technique is proposed to determine contaminant bioavalibility and improve the predictability of these guidelines and ensure the ecological sustainable development of coastal environments.Read moreRead less
