Summary
Reading as a cultural and historical practice. A better understanding and use of reading as an academic tool for Indigenous and non-Indigenous students and educators will be a result of the research. It will provide a new understanding of how reading skills can be used by Indigenous students to comprehend academic information and how academics can approach reading without excluding Indigenous knowledges.

This project aims to develop novel methods for Aboriginal communities to describe and share place-based knowledge of cultural landscapes using historical travel routes. This is a priority to reconnect people to their cultural identify and uncover significant heritage trails in southeast Queensland. The Wakka Wakka people will train Indigenous youth in geographic information system (GIS) technologies to collect place-based stories from elders, thus transferring knowledge between generations. Picturing change: 21st Century perspectives on recent Australian rock art, especially that from the European contact period. Australia, long known for its prehistoric rock art of world heritage value, will now also be known for its unique and diverse body of contact rock art. This project will benefit tourism in remote regions, many of which are or are near World Heritage Areas (eg. Kakadu, Uluru, Blue Mountains). This project aims to investigate how media technologies can facilitate cross-cultural engagement between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people. There is a need to break down the barriers that limit cross-cultural engagement with heritage issues. Mobile media environments provide ways to build this engagement through place-based incentives. By using performance studies approaches to analyse public political events this work will provide the practical benefit of increasing our understanding of how different cultures interpret and misinterpret each other in public encounters. Examining the dynamics that have and continue to operate between people and social discourses increases our understanding of ourselves as Australians and our ability to interpret ourselves. My Island Home - Construction of cultural identity for Torres Strait Islanders who migrated to the mainland post World War Two. The aims of the research are to examine 1) the construction of cultural identity for Torres Strait Islanders who migrated to Cairns during 1946 to 1955 and 2) to identify issues in relation to the construction and maintenance of cultural identity; the Islander's 'integration' into Australian society; and the transitional processes they negotiated in establishing new com ....My Island Home - Construction of cultural identity for Torres Strait Islanders who migrated to the mainland post World War Two. The aims of the research are to examine 1) the construction of cultural identity for Torres Strait Islanders who migrated to Cairns during 1946 to 1955 and 2) to identify issues in relation to the construction and maintenance of cultural identity; the Islander's 'integration' into Australian society; and the transitional processes they negotiated in establishing new communities away from the Torres Strait. This project is significant as it is one of the very few research projects conducted by a Torres Strait Islander on this issue, and its outcome will be a new perspective on the migration and culture of Torres Strait Islander people.

This project will produce a negotiated model of Indigenous teaching and learning in early childhood settings by documenting the diversity of Indigenous knowledge from the Northern Territory. This model will be suitable for sharing with Indigenous and non-Indigenous children within the early childhood sector.
