Global Encounters & First Nations Peoples: 1000 Years of Australian History. This fellowship aims to examine one thousand years of dynamic encounters between Australia’s Indigenous peoples and voyagers from the sea. The project expects to use an interdisciplinary, multilingual team to generate new understandings by synthesising historical, archaeological, anthropological and linguistic sources from Australian and European collections. Torres Strait Islander History: Sport, Culture and Identity. This project aims to investigate sport as a means of understanding the cultures, identities and history of Torres Strait Islanders. Through a community-centred approach, and a project team including Torres Strait Islanders, the project challenges versions of Australian history that marginalise the Strait or conflate Islanders with Aboriginal people. Revitalising Wunda shields: Safeguarding endangered cultural practices. This project investigates endangered shield-making practices of northwest Western Australia and explores the potential of cultural revitalisation. By researching existing museum holdings of Wunda Shields in Australia and overseas, this project expects to generate new forms of knowledge that have been ignored or misunderstood by the archive. Developing a Digital Keeping Place that can re-house the Wunda Shields and re-priorit ....Revitalising Wunda shields: Safeguarding endangered cultural practices. Indigenous peoples have always undertaken extensive travel and movement, but colonisation brought new reasons for travel and new Indigenous peoples from New Zealand and the Pacific to Australia. Historians have not yet fully grappled with these histories. These migrations and journeys always traversed Indigenous geographies. Bringing Indigenous perspectives and ethical methodologies to an analysis of mobilities, we aim to ....Indigenous mobilities to and through Australia: agency and sovereignties. This project aims to provide a historical exploration of the experiences of self-determination in Aboriginal communities in the Northern Territory. Working in partnership with Indigenous collaborators, it expects to generate new knowledge of the challenges and opportunities which arose from the process of self-determination. Expected outcomes include a new history of the Northern Territory as shaped by self-determination, ....Self-determination for Indigenous Australia: histories, visions and voice. The archaeology will focus on the Ningaloo coast, Pilbara and Western Desert. This region is experiencing expansion in resource extraction, energy production and tourism, key to Australia's post-COVID recovery.
