Summary
This project will establish an Indigenous Australian reference genome (the NCIGrg) within the National Centre for Indigenous Genomics (NCIG) using advanced genome sequencing technologies and data analytics and evaluate its research and clinical utility. The NCIGrg will be cornerstone of future genomic research and its clinical application in Indigenous communities. It will underpin NCIG’s commitment to ensuring that Indigenous Australians are included in the benefits of genomic medicine.
Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) is rare in developed countries except in indigenous populations where there is a shortage of quality health care, overcrowding, poverty and poor nutrition as in remote Australia. Advanced RHD affects the heart valves which can lead to heart failure, an increased risk of stroke and infection of the heart. The aim of this research project will be to inform the development of rational and evidence-based recommendations for the management of advanced RHD.

Indigenous people have extensive knowledge of sustainable land and sea management. We hypothesise that there are greater health benefits gained through employment in land and sea management ventures, and their families, than employment which does not utilise traditional knowledge. This study will give qualitative and quantitative feedback of ground level application of this relatively new employment venture and recognition of the wealth of Indigenous knowledge.

Combined electroencephalography (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is used to detect the anatomical areas in the brain that show electrical activity. Several centres worldwide use this technique to localise the seizure focus in patients with epilepsy. However, there is a lack of validation of the currently applied techniques. Current analysis methods have been developed and validated for other fMRI paradigms, such as motor tasks.
