Smart materials from semi-soft particles. This project will combine precision polymer chemistry to material science to develop structured nanoparticles for applications in photonics and shape memory materials.
Advanced adsorbents for gas separations. Efficient purification of natural gas and separation of similarly-sized molecules in gas mixtures is increasingly important in our drive to develop a more sustainable way of living in an energy-constrained world. This project will develop a new class of adsorbents to deliver a level of separation efficiency much higher than that currently in use.
Tibet's rivers in the Anthropocene: history and present trajectories. This project aims to produce a multifaceted history of the eastern Tibetan Plateau's rivers, focusing on the increasing human impacts during the Anthropocene. It will combine data from archival, cultural and oral sources in multiple languages with the results of scientific studies of river flow, water quality, and sediment, ice, and tree-rings analysis. The project will produce both historical narratives and graphic representa ....Tibet's rivers in the Anthropocene: history and present trajectories. The project will produce both historical narratives and graphic representations that model past land and water usage. The results of the project will underpin environmental policy for this hydrologically and ecologically crucial region, including the development of a paradigm of care based on the region's indigenous cultural resources.Read moreRead less
Consciousness in the predictive mind. The project aims to provide a unified approach to the nature of consciousness. Neuroscience and philosophy are still unable to explain how the brain gives rise to our conscious experience. Competing theories of consciousness are piecemeal, difficult to test and compare, and mostly formulated without much regard to a general theory of brain function. This project takes a different approach: it front-loads a new and influential general theory of brain function ....Consciousness in the predictive mind. This project takes a different approach: it front-loads a new and influential general theory of brain function, and aims to use this theory to determine which theories of consciousness can be defended and which rejected. The anticipated outcome is a unified scientific and theoretical approach to consciousness, achieving a deeper and more integrated understanding of a major field of contemporary neuroscience and philosophy research.Read moreRead less

This sociological project aims to develop a new approach to understanding the role of digital technologies in efforts to overcome loneliness. The team expects to generate new knowledge of how digital technologies are used by people who feel lonely and applied in policies and programs, using an innovative approach to explore different views, gaining the essential knowledge for assisting lonely Australians, and building much-needed research capacity in the sociology of loneliness and digital technologies. This should provide significant benefits such as a deep understanding of the sociocultural factors that influence people’s use of digital technologies to address loneliness, and evidence-based support for effective strategies and policies.Read moreRead less

Non-equilibrium material phases. This project aims to synthesise and characterise exotic materials produced in the laboratory under conditions that replicate those inside planets and stars. Highly non-equilibrium processing methods are needed to find entirely new material forms of elements and compounds created under extreme pressure and temperature. The project will use its laser-based synthesis method to explore and understand the non-equilibrium pathways and develop new materials. Understandi ....Non-equilibrium material phases. Highly non-equilibrium processing methods are needed to find entirely new material forms of elements and compounds created under extreme pressure and temperature. The project will use its laser-based synthesis method to explore and understand the non-equilibrium pathways and develop new materials. Understanding how these materials form could lead to the next materials revolution. This research will lead to materials that industry sectors can exploit for commercial benefits.Read moreRead less
High hopes, high risk? A sociological study of stem cell tourism. This project investigates the phenomenon of stem cell tourism, particularly the factors shaping patients’ expectations and decisions in relation to the promising new field of stem cell research. As the first in-depth study on this form of medical travel, the project will provide valuable information to policy makers.
How expectations shape testing in healthcare. This project aims to understand the sociocultural processes underpinning optimism for the use of testing technologies in healthcare. Australians are using more tests, which increases healthcare costs. This project will use the Australian national cancer screening programmes and routine clinical practice as case studies to determine human decision-making traits in sociological terms. The project expects to increase understanding of the sociocultural f ....How expectations shape testing in healthcare. Patients’ use of digital media. This project aims to determine how Australians use digital media and how this influences the development and availability of treatments and the sociocultural factors underlying this digital media use. Patients can use digital media to manage their own health, but this may result in patient harm and a loss of public confidence in the underlying science. The intended outcome is to gain insights into this recent and fast-growing sociological phenomenon, and provide a ....Patients’ use of digital media. This project aims to determine how Australians use digital media and how this influences the development and availability of treatments and the sociocultural factors underlying this digital media use. Patients can use digital media to manage their own health, but this may result in patient harm and a loss of public confidence in the underlying science. The intended outcome is to gain insights into this recent and fast-growing sociological phenomenon, and provide a scientific basis for formulating public policy strategies to ensure that healthcare resources are used efficiently and cost-effectively.Read moreRead less
