This project is an historical sociological study, which examines the unfolding Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse alongside past Inquiries into child maltreatment. It explores how changing understandings of children's development, vulnerability and rights have shaped social policy, educational responses and public attitudes towards safeguarding children and promoting their wellbeing. In particular, it investigates how concepts of childhood and policy approaches are changing as a result of social imperatives for openness and disclosure about matters once considered taboo. This project will advance conceptual policy insights on this major social issue and sociological knowledge of childhood and the forms and effects of late modernity.Read moreRead less
Smart materials from semi-soft particles. This project will combine precision polymer chemistry to material science to develop structured nanoparticles for applications in photonics and shape memory materials.
Advanced adsorbents for gas separations. Efficient purification of natural gas and separation of similarly-sized molecules in gas mixtures is increasingly important in our drive to develop a more sustainable way of living in an energy-constrained world. This project will develop a new class of adsorbents to deliver a level of separation efficiency much higher than that currently in use.
Consciousness in the predictive mind. The project aims to provide a unified approach to the nature of consciousness. Neuroscience and philosophy are still unable to explain how the brain gives rise to our conscious experience. Competing theories of consciousness are piecemeal, difficult to test and compare, and mostly formulated without much regard to a general theory of brain function. This project takes a different approach: it front-loads a new and influential general theory of brain function ....Consciousness in the predictive mind. This project takes a different approach: it front-loads a new and influential general theory of brain function, and aims to use this theory to determine which theories of consciousness can be defended and which rejected. The anticipated outcome is a unified scientific and theoretical approach to consciousness, achieving a deeper and more integrated understanding of a major field of contemporary neuroscience and philosophy research.Read moreRead less
Governing the blue economy in maritime Asia-Pacific. This project has the potential to inform more socially equitable and environmentally sustainable governance outcomes.Read moreRead less
Measuring the Mind: A Framework for Building a Consciousness Meter . This project aims to develop a new framework for measuring consciousness. The lack of well-validated measures of consciousness is at the root of a methodological crisis in the science of consciousness. Drawing on work in the philosophy of science and mind, the project plans to investigate whether consciousness can be measured in the way that other natural properties can be measured. The results of this project may inform guidelines for the objective assessment of consciousness in the context of post-coma brain injury, anaesthesia, epileptic absence seizures, infancy and non-human animals.Read moreRead less

How genomics is shaping healthcare: an ethnographic study. This project aims to generate new understandings of how science and biomedicine are co-producing and shaping healthcare. This will be achieved by combining hospital and laboratory ethnography to examine how genomic data is produced, circulated and applied in clinical settings. This will be achieved by combining hospital and laboratory ethnography to examine how genomic data is produced, circulated and applied in clinical settings. The project aims to build a theoretical framework and conceptual understanding of genomic medicine that may be used by practitioners and may inform policy. This project should provide significant benefits such as minimising costs by helping identify and streamline decision-making processes, and by showing how public engagement practices shape patients' and practitioners' approaches to genomics.Read moreRead less

Highly non-equilibrium processing methods are needed to find entirely new material forms of elements and compounds created under extreme pressure and temperature. The project will use its laser-based synthesis method to explore and understand the non-equilibrium pathways and develop new materials. Understanding how these materials form could lead to the next materials revolution. This research will lead to materials that industry sectors can exploit for commercial benefits.Read moreRead less
High hopes, high risk? A sociological study of stem cell tourism. This project investigates the phenomenon of stem cell tourism, particularly the factors shaping patients’ expectations and decisions in relation to the promising new field of stem cell research. As the first in-depth study on this form of medical travel, the project will provide valuable information to policy makers.

This project aims to understand the sociocultural processes underpinning optimism for the use of testing technologies in healthcare. Australians are using more tests, which increases healthcare costs. This project will use the Australian national cancer screening programmes and routine clinical practice as case studies to determine human decision-making traits in sociological terms. The project expects to increase understanding of the sociocultural factors that influence decision-making and behaviour in healthcare settings, and help formulate effective social and economic policies.Read moreRead less
