This network will develop an interdisciplinary multi-layered approach to understanding migration processes and the related social, health and economic effects. With the input of scholars in diverse fields, the network will play a significant role in the development of a national migration database, in training early career researchers and in developing social policy. With the input of scholars in diverse fields, the network will play a significant role in the development of a national migration database, in training early career researchers and in developing social policy. It will also stimulate new areas of research, integrate the dynamics of migrant populations with migrants' own experiences and perceptions, add to knowledge in the priority area 'safeguarding Australia', and enhance our understanding of the cultural, social and economic impact on Australia of a significant migrant presence.Read moreRead less

Indonesian Democracy: The Politics of Failed Reform and Regime Viability. Despite high hopes following the fall of Indonesia's authoritarian regime, political reform has been limited. The project examines the reasons for slow progress. Among the areas to be studied are constitutional and electoral reform, military reform, judicial reform, decentralisation, preservation of order and economic reform. It will argue that the weakness of the state in carrying out reforms is largely due to the penetra ....Indonesian Democracy: The Politics of Failed Reform and Regime Viability. The issues of foreign affairs and national security have become increasingly important to Australians in the wake of the Bali bombing, the invasion of Iraq, and the 'War on Terror.' However there are a number of unknowns in research of this kind. What are the public's key concerns? How have our current attitudes been shaped and how much have our opinions changed in recent years? An exploration of the frequency, outcomes, enablers and constraints of bystander anti-racism. Bystander anti-racism involves ordinary people speaking up and taking prosocial action when witnessing racism. This project will develop empirical understandings of this underexplored, yet potentially powerful, form of anti-racism, including its frequency, the outcome of action, and factors that enable and constrain bystander anti-racism.
Gender and Employment Equity: Strategies for Advancement in Australian Universities. Gender inequity in pay and employment remain a feature of Australian society and can impair labour productivity. Lower female labour force participation rates continue to be a major issue, resulting in less than optimum use of women's skills. This project undertakes detailed analysis of these issues in Australian Universities, the major training site for the national skilled workforce. Duties beyond borders: A historical approach to protecting the vulnerable. What, if anything, do states owe to vulnerable people beyond their borders, be they seeking asylum, needing humanitarian assistance, or requiring protection from mass atrocities? This project plans to take a historical approach to answering this question. There is a long and rich history of thinking about duties to vulnerable strangers and foreigners, but the contemporary literature on global justice and the ‘responsibili ....Duties beyond borders: A historical approach to protecting the vulnerable. What, if anything, do states owe to vulnerable people beyond their borders, be they seeking asylum, needing humanitarian assistance, or requiring protection from mass atrocities? This project plans to take a historical approach to answering this question. There is a long and rich history of thinking about duties to vulnerable strangers and foreigners, but the contemporary literature on global justice and the ‘responsibility to protect’ is largely blind to it. The project aims to redress this by producing a history of the idea that states have duties to assist and protect those beyond their borders from mass suffering. It combines a large-scale global study of all amnesties included in peace accords from 1980 to 2005 with four case studies drawn from the Asia-Paci?c region: Indonesia/Aceh; Papua New Guinea/Bougainville; East Timor; and the Solomon Islands.
